New year, new layout (GWR OO 1930s)

Quite a big photo update, as I've been working on scenery and didn't want to post any shots of it unfinished!

First, this is the tunnel at the right-hand end of the layout:

The tunnel mouth is Skaledale re-painted so it's the same colour as other stonework on the layout. The inside's lined with Metcalfe card and the hill is constructed of polystyrene, covered with modrock then grassed with hanging basket liner. The two trees are Skale Scenics, and are surprisingly good.

This is a smaller hill behind the goods yard:

It's built the same way as the bigger one. The glue's still wet on the hoist, which is why it's being held up by the paint pot!

I've also finished the layout's last major structure, Ratio's model of Highley signal box:






The railing's a little wonky, but apart from that I'm happy with it.

One more from the right, showing a new lamp hut in a nicely atmospheric shot that looks better than the layout actually is:


The next job is a couple of signals and planting some sheep on the hill.

The locos moved back into their shed this morning, having spent the last few weeks hidden away from all the glue and scatter. Here's 5555 against its new backdrop.

It's now a year since the first buildings started being constructed ahead of the layout itself stated, and the layout's very nearly finished with just a few bits of detailing left. The signals are up and the last bit of bare board has been vegetated.

This is the tunnel mouth, which had been the last area of bare board:

It's been filled with a combination of grass, bushes, deadfall and a tree. The right-hand side of the track is meant to be a tree that's been struck by lightning and partially cleared away; I didn't want too much there obscuring the track.

The signals are Ratio:

They're non-functional. You can just about make out a "beware of trains" sign in the foreground and sheep above the tunnel in the background.

Phew. Now that is looking good! Just as good as some of the models at the Exhibition at Crewe last weekend!

I really must get some more work done on my line.

That backsene really sets it up, if that figure was to fall out of shot you could mistake it as a real location, something about this shot that say wales to me???

DRS, it's not a backscene it's a bit of photoshoppery. The camera's sitting on the track with the actual backscene behind it, pointing out at the room so rather than post a pic of my house I put some hills in. I think the Welshness comes from the distant hills making it look like the station's on a hilltop itself.
