Re: Special Service Trains?

Just a bit of information here about what has been suggested. Paper trains - in the mid 60's when I used to catch the train home from Victoria to Balham at about 0430 the passenger compartments were used to carry the papers, as was the first Reading - Newbury DMU up till the late 70's. They were met...

Re: 1970s Railway Video

LIDL's were doing one for £14.99. Silvercrest USB Video Grabber.

Bought one, haven't tried it. Loads of cables and bits in the box to bit any combination I should think.

Re: The empty railways of America

Had a fortnight in Florida recently and went down to Plant City where they had erected a viewing platform to watch the 'railroad action' in safety. It is a flat crossing so quite interesting. Unfortunately the 'action' is about twelve trains a day, one of which was a passenger train running three ho...

Re: Wagon type

Departmental locos were normally used off the main lines in particular locations. I lived for many years at Wolverton where there were a number of departmental locos in the ex LNWR 0-6-0's which used to push and pull coaching stock around the internal works rail system. They never went out onto the ...

Re: Platform both sides

Reading in its previous un-rebuilt state had two bays, one at each end of the central island platform. Plat 5 and 8 went round Plat 6 and 7, the bays. Doors in latter days were not opened on both sides, but on the drivers side only because it was DOO. Different in the days of slam door where people ...

Re: Train shows IN the U.S.

American railroading seems to be on a different scale to us, apart from the OO/HO difference. As noted already the Model Railroader seems to the one to look at. There are a couple of travelling train shows that tour the US so you have to be in the right place at the right time. I haven't managed one...

Re: Goods shed - how to model the track bed?

My only experience was when I was working at Bicester North Goods Office in 1963, and the only thing I remember was that the track bed was hidden under about sixty years of having light weight wagons standing on it. I don't seem to remember seeing sleepers, though I suspect there must have been, but...

Re: The Anthony Adler collection, auction

Having been to our local auction house for their bi-annual railway auction I was quite shocked at some prices being achieved, and also at some really quality items that achieved peanuts. Good job I was sitting down as the price of some early tinplate went through the roof, and amazed at some quality...

Re: Signaling on my layout - need a starting point

In that case I would go for the junction signal on the platform end.

Re: Signaling on my layout - need a starting point

Think about it like this. A signal is to let the Driver know that the line ahead is clear, at least as far as the next signal, and also lets him know where he is going. If your junction is close to the starting point you could have a junction signal as the starting signal at the platform end, or, if...

Re: Signaling on my layout - need a starting point

If your bay platform is intended for passenger use, or at least trains that do more than a shunt move then you will need a start signal. Shunting moves are based on low speed, not to exceed 20 mph, Drivers to proceed as far as the next signal or as far as he can see to be clear, so anything going on...

Strangely co-incidental I grant you, but I don't model in N gauge anyway but was disappointed for those that bought in good faith only to be let down like that. I can't believe it is normal.

Re: Dapol imperfections or am I expecting too much?

I don't normally look down this section but three cases have come to my attention in the last week re Dapol. One was a steam outline loco making horrible graunching noises as new from the box. He was a local modeller who had contacted our club for advice. Another was a Club member who came in with a...

Re: Dormitories on the line?

Were any provided in decomisioned coaches? It would seem an obvious quick fix if they became necessary due to wartime route changes. Newbury Racecourse was certainly a wartime staffing point using old coaches. The racecourse was transformed into a huge yard because of the proximity of Greenham Comm...

Re: Facebook 'live' presentation

It seems Hornby are reliving the fate of the British motorcycle and car industry on the 70's. It started with motorbikes, oil leak free engines, electric starters, twelve volt lighting, indicators, all those little things that made me turn in a nine month old Bantam (support the home industry) for a...
