Electrical connectors

Post by 4472 »

I am attempting to wire up an on/on switch. I haven't got really steady hands so I don't want to solder, only as a last resort. I was looking at crimping female connectors onto the wire, then pushing them onto the switch . The male(s) on the switch measure 2 x 1 mm, and are approx. 3 mm long. I have looked on various suppliers websites but have been unable to garner anything meaningful regarding sizes. Can anyone help please ??

Do you mean spade terminals for a toggle switch? If so, these are various sizes.

Thar's the sort of thing I need but they seem too wide for my spade end. I am not an electrician and can't match up my spade size with the products shown. I don't want to buy a bunch that are too big

As a bit of a "Botch" job you could use a single piece of 3.0Amp terminal block (cut from the 12 way strip as supplied) and screw one end on the switches terminal and the wire in the other end, Example 3.0Amp terminal block.... https://www.screwfix.com/p/essentials-3 ... gLAefD_BwE

However, soldering the wires has to be the best, can you get someone to assist you with the soldering?

It sounds like you have a very bespoke switch if the smallest in the links at 2.2mm wide are too big! I would have thought these would fit if the terminal is 2mm wide.

It may help if you post a picture of the switch and terminals. If you really having trouble finding suitable connectors, Id suggest contacting wherever you bought the switches from and see what they advise or, buy a standard switch where known spade connectors can be used.

Alternatively, you will have to try soldering wire to the switch you have.

Bite the bullet and learn to solder, anything else will be too unreliable.

there are crimps for them, like most such things a royal pain to find, you could do worse than spend a bit of time on the Farnell and RS websites trying to find a similar switch, then get the data sheet and see if it recommends a crimp to use

I've got similar switches and never yet found a good crimp, larger ones will take normal spade type terminals

something like this maybe, would need to check the measurements

note, if that looks about right don't get them there, look on aliExpress - or get a single pack from eBay and if they fit go to AliExpress - should be able to get them in bags of 100-500 for sensible prices

I did a bit of digging and found where I bought the switch. I contacted them and they could supply the correct connectors, so I have ordered some.
