The Duke of Sutherland

The Duke of Sutherland’s Saloons, Locomotives and Railways

In January 1950, G. Charles published a short (2 page) article about the Duke of Sutherland’s railway interests. [1]

It was only the nationalisation of the British railways which brought to an end the Duke of Sutherland’s hobby of owning and running his own train with running powers over LMS lines.

Just imagine what the UK motorway network might have been like if the landed classes had not been near bankrupted by the consequences of two world wars. Private on and off ramps serving the 'private' lane, with a minimum speed of 'very fast', to be progressively adjusted upwards as prestige car makers improved capabilities; as in 'Peter Simple's' supersession of the Boggs Super-Oaf by the Boggs Super-Vandal.
