do the twist again..
Made a start on the Parkside kit of the LNER extra long CCT van, and while its not a bad kit there are a few niggles. e.g. mis-alignment for the roof ventilators which are a bodge but one I can live with. more annoyingly the thing has a torsional twist along the length of about 10 degrees, floor warped and essentially no structural strength to correct it. have manually twisted it about 45 degrees the other way just shy of snapping the thing in half which sorts it for a few seconds but then its back.
hmm.
open to suggestions, current thinking is some styrene sheet in a rectangle on a diagonal inside to counter the twist, with angle section to brace that in place and once its all dried solid gently heat it to very slightly soften the plastic and hope is sorts itself out.
plus side, with the twist out, and suitable weight it will go round an 18" curve, at low speed. any slight twist and straight off the rails. once its square will get some weight added, would have seriously benefitted from either being sprung or compensated in some way

Re: do the twist again..
Get it nice and warm, perhaps in hot water, give it a twist and hold it until it's cold? May work?

in theory yes, thinking brace it first then do that and let the plastic adaptRoger (RJ) wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 8:24 pm Get it nice and warm, perhaps in hot water, give it a twist and hold it until it's cold? May work?

Re: do the twist again..
this has been left a day or two with some weight and is now not so bad, still a twist but not a serious one. its currently got some glue drying with half the recommended weight added over each axle, will add the rest later.
annoyingly now one of the axleboxes has moved inboard slightly, so still needs warming up a bit to fix that. coupler adaptor blocks are now in and drying too. then to work out how to fit the steps as the supplied diagram isn't exactly helpful, likely wait the Hornby one arriving and copy that.

A few niggles? From what you describe I would have binned it by now.aleopardstail wrote:

Remember the three Ps, says my wife: Patience, Persistence and Perseverance. Trouble is, I have a bad memory as well.

I used to counter twist with some packing while secured to a steel ruler
with many elastic bands and leave for a couple of days to let soggy seams
fully harden.
Just some of my extreme practices.

Re: do the twist again..
got a hot water bath earlier, I think I have gotten rid of most of the problem. now waiting on couplings to arrive to allow it to be dragged around a bit for some testing. the tight curve will be a problem until the curve is fixed, if it handles the rest I'm happy

Re: do the twist again..
Managed to get the steps fitted, one brake leaver in the wrong place (I think) not sure if these have them both sides which was removed reasonably easily. coupling hooks also in. glue now curing for a while before hopefully a bit of paint goes on

Thanks for that but, nah, sounds like I'd have to learn something. I'm much better suited to indolence. Plus, my better half has set me to making a fold-away jigsaw easel, so that has my two remaining brain cells fully occupied. I might just have a coffee and some hobnobs. The desktop aquarium I bought for my Christmas present is coming along nicely and the shrimps are settled in. Sorry, what was I talking about?

current state of the thing
virtually all the twist has gone and I suspect over a bit of time the little that is left will settle out anyway.
steps are a pain to fit and having assembled much more modern kits you learn to appreciate the quality that goes into some of the new ones. here the tooling is a tad old and it shows in places
assembly basically done, need to file the tops of the buffers down and can then get some primer then pain sprayed on, roof painted on its own then added after so the glazing can be fitted after painting.virtually all the twist has gone and I suspect over a bit of time the little that is left will settle out anyway.

Re: do the twist again..
hence the video having "what could possibly go wrong", obviously by the time I edited it I had a pretty good idea.. I mean to be fair the model hasn't caught fire (yet) or started anything other than a a small war that hardly anyone noticed..
the video is approaching the #1 viewed on the channel, and this is one I thought was far too long and far too rambling to even put up

Re: do the twist again..
bit of paint added, roof needs going over again to smooth it out, bodywork is done bar panel lining etc, underframe black details to sort out
coming out nicely, colour isn't quite right, not red enough but its close and I think weathering will make it look light faded

Views!

You should get the cat to sit on a few things, then the title can say something like: 'Animal attack!! Is it all over??'aleopardstail wrote:

I enjoyed the video BTW.
