My updated N Gauge design with 2 loops

All comments welcome. Buildings are just for ideas, not permanent.

Edit: Board is 125 x 75cm

the little two road loco shed works, any particular reason its from the outer loop and not just a point from the inner one (either works, just curious)

for the goods shed you want at least two sidings and the mainline for shunting anything.

main issue is the capacity is quite limited, now that may not be a concern, with DCC you can get a good few locos on the two shed roads, and space to get a train out of the way up at the top to allow the good train to come out to play. plenty of scope for "non railway" stuff too, village or whatever

if you have the track the beauty of set track is you can set it up and try it, then change it. for "mainline" running twin loops looks best, can stick a bridge or two over to break the loop up visually

for me I'd be temped to lengthen it a bit and go nearer the ends, ideally you don't want a point right after a curve, it works but with a crossover (two sets of points to go from one loop to the other) a bit of space helps

overall though its got character to it and for a few locos and other stuff to potter about on while you work out where you want to eventually go with all this its good.

oh, a hint also, get hold of some copydex (the stinky fishy latex glue), small dabs of that will hold track down nicely but can be pulled up and pealed off pretty easily, bit more messy than nails, takes a tad longer but way easier to sort of changes later.

second hint: paint the top of the plywood/cork/whatever before sticking track on it, it firstly looks better and secondly is wayyy easier than doing it later (some sort of mid grey for track or just a brown works)

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.

I've lengthened the straights to move the points off the curve. This also gives me a bit more space inside and outside to do some shunt/shed stuff. Managed to cram it up nearer to the edges while still keeping the 125cm width - it's not a hard stop in terms of width but it works with the desk I'm using as a workbench for all this. I've pulled a couple of noggins out of the baseboard too, I think I was accidentally designing for a 6'x4' OO layout.

I'll need to buy a bunch more track now as I only bought enough initially for my original inner loop. Now it's taking shape I should visit my local model shop (again)

All that remains is for me to decide where to put the road bridge over the track with an obligatory bus going over it, I've read that's a thing :D

what I ended up with is this (and I am not suggesting to copy it, there are many things wrong here)

top right is a covered over bit, and yes the bus is required - its why mine failed

that tweaked plan looks good, plenty of space to play about, not sure what you have planned top left, if its just a siding there is space for another inside it, it thats a station bay is good
