These are often overlooked by railway modellers but can provide a relatively cheap source of buildings. 28mm scale is approximately 1:56 but some structures are suitable for O scale, likewise 15mm scale can be useful for OO. Wargaming scales are cited as the height to a standing figure's eyes.

Works the other way around too.. N gauge is perfect for 10mm scale scenery and OO for 20mm scale.blackcloudrail wrote: ↑Sun Nov 17, 2024 6:24 am These are often overlooked by railway modellers but can provide a relatively cheap source of buildings. 28mm scale is approximately 1:56 but some structures are suitable for O scale, likewise 15mm scale can be useful for OO. What is well worth doing however is finding a local wargames shop and having a look round, specifically you will likely find an amazing range of acrylic paints, and also "technical" paints, these are things like a mud texture paste that can be applied and provides, well a mud texture which is then very receptive of washes and drybrushing. also things like pre-made static grass tufts, flowers, small plants, grass mats and similar scenic items.
plus stuff like styrene sheet, cork sheet, balsa, spray primers, craft knives, files, lighting etc
Re: Wargaming kits
Aah - wargaming 15mm scale = OO approximately. That's handy to know.

This is Cognito, HO scale, Spaghetti Western inspired. The flat roofed building is a 15mm Sarissa Presicion kit.

Brings up all sorts of new possibilities for landscaping - cactus, tumbleweeds, gallows, saloons with dancing girls, the list goes on...

Re: Wargaming kits
OO ~= 20mm
there are plenty of MDF kits in 20mm, trouble is without a lot of work they look like mdf kits. can be made to look good but to be honest would be better off with a Metcalfe card kit or Superquick at that point
don't get me wrong such are good, I have loads for various games and they can look good, but unless you have the kit to custom make them I think they never look right - especially as they are sized usually for use in games

Re: Wargaming kits
couple of examples, 28mm scale
simple MDF shipping container kits, painted to, hopefully, look like slightly battered metal. they lack a lot of the surface texture a plastic kit, or 3d printed one would have so need to make the paint work a bit harder. they are quite robust.
Sarrissa also have a "railway" range, as in MDF trains, MDF track etc for gaming
