The Bufferstop Challenge - Diorama Competition.

Post by Dad-1 »

Some significant events around.
First the passing of John Williams AKA Bufferstop, moderator and anchor man of NRM
for many years.
Then soon we will be into the final year to complete the first quarter of the 21st century.

We have also not had a 'competition' for many years.
I have thought we should have a small diorama competition, out competitions have always been for 'Fun'
What I'm proposing, and will do myself regardless of others joining in is to make a SMALL DIORAMA preferably
not exceeding 12" (305 mm) square. To be ready for judging by MID JANUARY, this gives nigh on
2 months to make.
Always planned to have a minimum of cost, preferably trying something you've not done before. Railway
content optional.

As I have said I will do one regardless and my scrap of ply wood is 220 mm x 250 mm.
Included in that time frame I will produce a '00' Dapol Presflo cement wagon that can be awarded to the winning
entry. Voting restricted to entrants ? That is optional at the moment.

I can give it a go. Will a building be ok with track going in it? Something I can use on a later layout maybe? Not sure where all my scenic stuff is but I can improvize if I can't find what I want.

Thanks Gents.

A speedy response.

I've been more concerned with the prize.
A cement wagon just happened to be 'In Stock' and quite honestly Bufferstop was the
cement that helped keep NRM together & running smoothly.
Already have the body together with around 10 grams extra weight inside, checked the
wheel sets for 14.5 B2B. Bearing in mind the Bachmann version is now around £40 this
I hope should be worth winning.

I have a few hospital visits lined up. One over Christmas? Providing all goes well I shall try my hand at a diorama.
Mid-January is closing date? I must start planning.

By the way, I love the idea of calling it The Bufferstop Challenge.

12 inches…. By mid January.

I am sure I can find some old bits and bobs, in the ’old bits and bobs box’ and knock something up.

Count me in Geoff.
Once upon a time I built a model railway in the loft. Now I dabble on much smaller baseboards.

Again, Thanks to those that have joined, perhaps we can have a few more ??

I already have the Presflo chassis running - At the moment it's got less rock (uneven chassis)
than one of my Bachmann versions. I'm using the Bachy as a guide for the few extras I'll be adding,
like wire roof access rails. Will it be Bauxite, or Grey ????

While I'm doing that I'm thinking about my diorama !!
Build being started !!

Plan : Not even in my head yet HOWEVER it will have a bufferstop. I found an unopened Peco timber one in the shed !!
I'll have to butcher it a bit ?

The next couple of months will be absolutely manic for me for various reasons, so I doubt I will have time to take part but I will be cheering the competitors on. Will photos be viewable in this thread or somewhere else?

I'm in  not sure what I'll do just yet but it sounds like good. Maybe next year we could do a tour again?

While I'm still thinking of what I'll make here is the prize.
Not bad in less than 24 hours.

I use the Bachmann one as a pattern for bending wires at the ladder top.

would suggest entrants start a thread here for it as it grows, fair few gaming sites have a monthly challenge or something and want the in progress stuff shown.

prize is nice, totally out of my era but then not entering to win
