Im intending doing a programming track as suggested on Flashbang's website which will have an isolated track section between the PM and normal track. This will need a 4 Pole double throw switch and allow a loco to be run onto the PM track but not onto the isolation track if the switch isnt thrown back for normal use.
However, I see there are 'on on' or 'on off on' 4pdt switches and Im concerned using an on on might momentarily cause an issue providing power from the normal DCC output and the PM output. Is it better to use an on off on switch instead of an on on one?
4PDT on on or on off on switch?

Re: 4PDT on on or on off on switch?
have used DPDT relays to swap between programming and running supplies to a siding without issue - the key bit is get the polarity the same for the two supply outputs.
on-off-on has the advantage of being able to also isolate the siding if that matters.
most switches are "break before make" so even an on-on will totally disconnect in the middle, "make before break" can be had but are rare
