Lighting four wheel coaches

Post by heda »

I realize this is nothing new but thought I'd post on just how easy it is to add coach lighting.

Wanting to add lights to the four wheel coaches on my Christmas end to end layout that switch off when the train enters the tunnel to the North Pole and come on again when it exits to give the impression it actually goes somewhere.

So purchased a couple of very reasonably priced coach lighting kits from Layouts4U.
Three led's stuck to a piece of card, latching reed switch stuck to the top of the card, battery holder stuck under the chassis with double sided tape and all connected up using very fine wire.

Because the windows and roof are one piece of clear plastic to stop light bleeding through the roof I used a dremmel to separate the windows then stuck them in place with a couple of drops of Revell contacta.

So far I have only tested by running a magnet along the roof which works exactly as it should, the real test will come later in the year when the layout comes out of storage for Christmas.
