What size for internal control panel wiring?

Basic electrical and electronics, such as DC/Analog control.

What size for internal control panel wiring?

Post by End2end »

I have used 16/0.2 wiring running from my point motors to loose connector blocks where the control panel will be.
The connector block is not connected to anything else as yet.

I have used 16/0.2 for the CDU wiring, daisy-chained from one switch to the next on the middle tags of each switch within my control panel.

My question is, do I need to use 16/0.2 from the loose connector blocks to the other 2 tags on each switch within the control panel or can this be 7/0.2 wire?
Thanks

Ideally the internal wiring should be the same gauge as the main runs, but if your control panel is small and space inside may become tight the odd fractions of an ohm that dropping down to 7/0.2 for the internal links will probably make little difference to your CDU. I've wired a few panels for various purposes and the flexibility of the wire makes a huge difference in how neatly the job can be done. When I worked for the old GPO Telephones I finally got around to doing the exchange wiring module (just in time for the introduction of System X and a total change in wiring) The instructor was gobsmacked that the neatest wiring exercise was by a bloke from the External Planning section, I didn't let on to him about my hobby.

Thanks Bufferstop. I'll go ahead and order the wire.

Coincidently, I've built many video editing facilities and recording studios and used Krone blocks in the rear connected to patch fields on the front.
Our wiring was a work of art. :D
Thanks

The bit that gave me most satisfaction, and b***** sore fingers was tying the wires into "runs" using waxed cotton thread. It was a job that even the girls in the factory hated doing because they invariably got callouses on their fingers. Wrapped wire terminations and plastic cable ties wiped out a whole skill in wiring. The back of the contact banks for the old Strowger selectors were more than just a work of art. Depending on how they were configured you got intricate repeating patterns, some of the exchange technicians could use the pattern to follow where an individual wire went, but they practised black arts. One guy had his workbench positioned by a particular rack, because the switches were prone to "lock ups" (two switches both locking on to the same request). He could smell one in about half the time the monitoring switch could. His nose would get him to one of the pair and he would pull out the disabling link, causing the fault to disappear before it got recorded. I traded in my "pliers wiring no2 and cutters diagonal" for a clipboard, car mileage, meetings with lots of people from the likes of estate architects, BR electrification planners and the young ladies who worked in everyone's drawing offices,

Cable ties. What a great invention.!
Yet I could never release the bloomin' temporary cable ties with just my fingers, having to always resort to using a small pair of pliers.

I first used cable ties when working for Rank Xerox they only ever supplied single use ones. Someone did a cost analysis on how long it took an expensive engineer to undo a well tied reusable one against the cost of the one shot ones. They only supplied us with one shot ones. Health and safety put out a bulletin saying that the excess length should not be cut off with a diagonal cut after someone cut their arm badly on a row of them, so now I only cut them square and close. Once you get into the habit it stays with you forever! i still like the look of a neatly tied loom!

Oh yes, cut wrongly they will cut through skin, sometimes deeply.
First fix was always with temporary cable ties. Second fix we would change them for permanent ties.
Sometimes we wouldn't even cut the tails off just tuck them behind themselves.
Thanks
