Welcome aboard Jane,
Watch it - there are so many different aspects to the hobby, most slightly
addictive. In my opinion it's a 3D art form that can either cost a fortune,
or be done on the cheap.
The difficulty is trying to keep within the envelope of reality. Have a browse
through the layouts under construction for ideas.

Dad 1 is quite right. As I live in the US, I have to practically sell a kidney to
get this nice British stuff. I model North American, too, and that is where
I get stuff on the cheap.
Most interesting to hear about a lady modeler, there are a few, but few between.
What aspects do you find most interesting? The scenery? Architecture? The
marvelous union of track and landscape- unlike motorways I have always marvelled
at how railways look as though they are part of a garden, not a strip of asphalt
trespassing the view?

Hi and welcome.
Someone mentioned about modelling on a budget (Or words to that effect). I am modelling to a tight budget and basing my modelling on the type of prototype which was run to a tight budget, but in the days when most other such narrow gauge lines were starting to close so one could pick up locos and stock at next to scrap prices. In the very early days when some lines were just starting to be preserved, my line will still be in private hands but wanting to also cater for the tourist trade to make ends meet when the goods and other non passenger revenue may not be as much as it needs to be.
So, the concept of "Rescuing" locos and stock brings an abundance of them to a railway which would naturally have very little except for waggons..., and yet be run "On a shoestring" itself, only just breaking even especially due to its investments in the stock purchased from railways which did not make it.
Therefore the scene will be interesting and mixed. I am also toying with the concept that the railway was set in a British colony abroad on an island somewhere?... But I am not sure if I should base it in Wales. I have mixed feelings as I want to do both!
