Tipp-Ex

Post by Bigmet »

We have quite a lot of this product, found as we cleared my in-laws' home earlier this year. (They had a typewriter for letters to newspapers and -quite frequent - formal communications of dissatisfaction with a product or service. While strictly mechanical, I suspect it will type: Dear Messrs XXXXXXXXX, I was very disappointed... by itself, if approached with sufficient ire and indignation evident.)

Now here's the thing. Tippex has changed since I last used it in the 1970s, no brush but instead a fine tipped foam wedge as an applicator and a thinner fluid too. This makes it very easy to apply the white goo in a neat straight line. Now I am at the moment working on a trainload of the 'Blue Spot' fish vans, which were white liveried, some of which hve spurious advertising on them. Would the Tippex cover this neatly? Yes it does, looks like a patch repaint, and will almost disappear when the dirt goes on. These vans ran fast and were usually a variation of the colours of rather grey milky coffee (remember Wimpy? the insipid colour of the vile stuff they served as white coffee).

But it gets better. These vans have sliding doors which go inside the van, so the outer faces get multiple scrape lines in the all pervasive dirt. Would the applicator help with this? Oh yes! Used with relatively little fluid it made neat parallel stripes with some texture, and with the dirt applied there was the suggestion of the scrape marks.

So a somewhat specialised use, probably not widely applicable in railway modelling...

I'd love to see some pictures Bigmet if possible.

Thanks

If it can do slightly transparent white, it would make a good job of whitelining a minor road, where the white paint is wearing thin and the texture is showing through.

I have used Tippex tape which comes in a cassette applicator thingy to edge platforms, draw road lining, etc. It is an extremely thin film and will break at a mere thought so reproducing faults in lining is dead easy to do.

My supply of Tipex dried up shortly after furnishing the last of our admin staff with their new word processors and donating all the typewriters to charity. Curses.
