New Spare Room Layout
Hi All, After months of planning and working out where the layout is going to located I settled on the the spare room along the back wall 9 foot x 2 foot.
The layout is a modified copy of RM Hopwood concept with a heritage centre added to it in OO.
The track is going to be all new Peco code 100 with medium electrofrog points and point motors (to be decided on).
Control is going to be DC as my loco stock is from Hornby late 70s early 80s. So any help you guys can give with the wiring would be really useful I have a Gaugemaster Twin Track controller for the power to the track, point motors and lighting stuff.
Any advice and info is always welcome.
Cheers.
Marcus

Re: New Spare Room Layout
After looking at the plan all weekend again I have made some changes to the layout.
I have moved the goods shed to the right hand side of the layout and the water tower up to the station.
I have also redone the points at the end of the platform to allow longer trains to come into the station.
I have also decided to go with seep pm1 point motors as they have the polarity switch bulit in. I am going to build a little test rig for these as I found a YouTube video showing this so if I can copy that it might help with a better understanding of the wiring.
Cheers

Re: New Spare Room Layout
The second plan looks better and should give plenty of operation with a twin controller.
Regarding wiring, I'd arrange for four main sections which can be switched to either controller.
Section 1: Main line and both platforms.
Section 2: Run-round loop
Section 3: Goods yard
Section 4: Engine shed area.
Also, have two secondary sections which are controller by changing the points.
Section a: Headshunt- switched between sections 2 and 3.
Section b: lower line of the goods yard/shed access. Switched between sections 3 and 4.
This will allow for some simultaneous moves where a loco positions wagons in the yard while another brings a train in or out of the station area.
Also, allow for isolating sections at the end of the upper platform (to allow a loco to be held there while another leaves with the coaches) and on each shed track to allow locos to be stacked up.

Well its been sometime but as there has not been much to do over the last couple of months I made a start on the layout.

Got the base board assembled and level its 8' x 20" which should give good scope for track layouts.Marcus

Re: New Spare Room Layout
I went away from the previous layout design and just set out some hornby set track for the time being just to get an idea of what I can expect when I get my new peco track.

Some more shots
I am running it on DC as nearly all of my locos are from pre digital era I haven't pinned that track down yet as I am wait for new track as the old hornby track is about 30+ years old and I can change things around.

Wise move. Hornby track of that age is galvanised steel, it's poor for conductivity and a pain to keep clean.marcusd666 wrote: I haven't pinned that track down yet as I am wait for new track as the old hornby track is about 30+ years old and I can change things around.

Growing old, can't avoid it. Growing up, forget it!

Your plan looks nice. Your lovely hydraulic buffers need to go at the end of the track where the passenger station is rather then the loco shed roads are, as they are designed as a last resort to prevent the shock of a collision into the buffers. They were usually found at city or town terminus stations but rarely seen at smaller country terminuses.
I would say that those Hornby hydraulic buffers go, they are excellent, as they double up to prevent ones model from damage if one happens to plough into them at speed (Easily done if one is not paying attention). I know they can take some force! I don't understand why they stopped making them a few years ago as they were one of the best things that Hornby made. Excellent things!

I know I had loads of track and points that are to far gone to be useful even just to test things out.Bufferstop wrote: Wise move. Hornby track of that age is galvanised steel, it's poor for conductivity and a pain to keep clean.

Yeah I always liked the hydraulic buffers never had the right location for them. One day I will when things progress on a bigger scale.Mountain wrote:Your plan looks nice. Mine withstood a Mainline class 45 with coaches ploughing into them flat out with no damage to loco or buffers. It sort of sprung the loco back in the opposite direction.

Re: New Spare Room Layout
Well with no new track or points on the horizon as everywhere is sold out I have started cleaning up my really old loco with some details here's my first go at my old triang Class 37.
Before: and after: Just need to do a repaint on the grey roof as it very worn out not sure how old it but it has always been in my collection.

What track is it you need? I managed to find somewhere with Peco streamline points still in stock at a reasonable price. I can't remember the name but will find the confirmation email if you want the company name?marcusd666 wrote:Well with no new track or points on the horizon as everywhere is sold out I have started cleaning up my really old loco with some details here's my first go at my old triang Class 37.
