GNR chocolate frame acrylic paint

Post by JLK2707 »

Is Humbrol 98 matt chocolate ideal to use for painting the Great Northern Class A1 locomotive?

The reason I ask is because I cannot get Phoenix rail paints sent to Australia.

I suspect 'Chocolate' as a description implies too much brown. The frames were a dark red oxide, so noticeably red-brown. It's difficult to judge the right shade, because with the correct red lining applied the hue is preceived somewhat differently, and especially in small scale model form.

I would suggest adding red oxide to the Chocolate, until you get something that subjectively pleases, using on line photos for guidance. Paints were hand mixed back in the day when applied to a GNR A1, so absolute accuracy really isn't required, I would suggest.
