Hi , I have a hornby 0-4-0 ' smokey joe ' loco i was wondering how i could slow the loco down so it runs slower any ideas ?

Run it on low throttle ...........
There isn't the room inside for a reduction gearbox and motor. Even the Pug outline is compromised to get a motor in !!
The boiler after the saddle tank, but before the cab should be at the same diameter and height as that in front of the tank.
The higher section is required to fit in the motor and motor chassis

Packed with lead, DCC fitted, well , no, very well run in, with spotless wheels and rails they can run at 3-5 scale mph, even cross insulated frog points at 1 mph - That is until the slightest speck of dirt gets in the way !!
You just have to be VERY gentle with your throttle openings.

Remember ALL the Hornby 0-4-0 chassis are from the same basic design, but the Pug has the least space for lead.
Why the lead - well it increases the pressure of wheel contact and therefore improves the reliability of the electrical contact. It also adds much to the traction these small light locos offer.

I once converted one to S4 as an LNER Y9, using Sharman wheels and small motor and home made double-reduction gearbox giving around 80:1 ratio.
Well weighted it would pull half a dozen wagons.
It ran for a short time with a scratch built tender based on the wooden ones some of the class had, the tender sides being made from cut down wooden splints from the chemistry lab.

Sold it when I changed to 7mm.

As dad1 says, cleanliness and as much weight as you can get in the shell. I have a wee Hornby 0-4-0 that runs quite slow. I fitted a good quality decoder, I also added some pickups to a spare wagon and hard wired them through to the decoder.
