Illegal.
I can assure you everyone here has propably broken the SAME law;
how?
Simples, if the answer to both of the following questions is Yes, then you have.
1.Have you ridden on a train?
2. have you used the toilet on the train?
Under code 48 (???) issued by the British Transport Police, it was made illegal for any member of the public to use ANY mechanical lever on the railway. With exceptions to, Doors and Ventalation.
Never anything about the toilet, in the station or not!!
(I'm sorry if this breaks the t&c's about illegal stuff, it's not really encouraging it. and its just a bit of (truthful) humor!!)

Re: Illegal.
I took my toddler to the train loo today on my way home and the flush is an electronic push button. If a mechanical lever is operated as a result then it's operated by the train system and not me.
Ignorance is a defence in this case as a lay person cannot be reasonably assumed to have knowledge of a train's electro-mechanical systems.
And the boy pressed the button anyway and he's too young to prosecute!

Re: Illegal.
that sounds like the law where apparently Christmas is still illegal
Bang goes my religion
And it is also perfectly legal to shoot a Scotsman on a Sunday with a bow and arrow
"Oi, Freddie, put the camera and get the bow and arrow out, the Flying Scotsman's arrived. You can take pictures of trains later"

Re: Illegal.
Wait a mo - how do they define mechanical lever?
Does that mean that when I have taken my bike off the rack and am standing at the door waiting for the train to stop, when I hold the brake lever (to prevent my bike rolling into my fellow passengers) in I am also breaching this code? Someone better clear out a room for me in the Tower! Only Mr Plod could come up with this idea - I'm sure it made perfect sense at the time.
As for shooting Scots with a bow and arrow - I thought this was only within the York city walls and afer sunset. The have a similar ancient rule in Chester regarding the Welsh!

Certainly within the city walls, I don't know about after sunset and is the station not within the city walls?

Re: Illegal.
A code can't be illegal, it needs to be an order
Can you quote the act this applies to
I have however found a section that refers to the illegal use of levers whilst on land
This is also a secton 48
The section basically covers the illegal use of signalling and track equipment, and has nothing to do with any other type of lever

Re: Illegal.
So technically speaking if this interpretation of railway law is correct.. which I have my doubts on! Pulling the communication cord which activates a lever to stop a train in an emergency .... is illegal. I think not!

Re: Illegal.
Anyone got a link to this "law" you are talking about?

Re: Illegal.
I'll try and find a link to it.
I found this in a 'steam railway' magazine, under the title 'Know your rights' They were mainly talking about trespassing and photography and some things like that, but in the conclusion it mentioned this.
I'll see I can find the magazine, before they get taken away
