Tosh's loft layout
Tosh's loft layout
Finally got to doing some work in the loft to make it fit for a layout, got plenty of time on my hands due to being made redundant so ive spent some of the time doing something worthwhile
Shame the chimney is smack bang in the middle of the loft
Here's a few piccies to be going on with.

Re: Tosh's loft layout
Nice space you have there. Never mind about the chimney stack - I'm sure you'll be able to make a feature out of it
What do you plan to do? Which era, steam or diesel, and any ideas about a track plan? I look forward to seeing this progress as I've got a loft layout which I'm only just starting too.

Re: Tosh's loft layout
Mighty
Im going for the modern era, from 80s to present(it's the era i was brought up in so why not)but may have the odd steam running for special railtours etc,got a rough track plan sorted but that may well change when track laying commences,it has always done in the past
Latest update
Finished constructing the basebaords and they are now being topped off with 1/16" cork sheets under where the track will sit.
Installed the dcc bus wire(a note to anyone, install bus wire before putting baseboards on,it must be much easier ),gonna solder the dropper wires whilst track laying and then spend ages joining them to the bus .
Going to have a tidy up and then put a few photos on

Re: Tosh's loft layout
Liking the chimney, gives it some mood! might give you a mood having to crawl around it!
Looks like a good sized layout though, I'm a noob just building a 6x4 and would like to ask what might be a silly question. I've heard the word BUS used quite abit but don't realy understand it, or at least i didn't but now i think i do after looking at your pics. By bus i take it you mean that the two wires running under the baseboards are frm the DCC controller and all you do is solder a length of wire to each ( or is it every other) track section and drop it thru the board to connect to the BUS with ScothLocks or similar? And i assume that each track section will need to connect to both red and blue. so for a twin oval there would effectively be four wires coming down to connect to the bus? Sorry to ask a question for myself on your thread but that's thefirst time i've seen a pic that has made bit of sense.
Tell me to get lost if you want!
Cheers
Graeme

Yes you got it, the 'bus' is the two large wires running underneath the length of the layout and dropper wires are soldered to (preferably every piece of) the track and connected to the bus, either by soldering or scotchloks as you said. More necessary with large layouts to avoid problems caused by too many track-joints, and if using DCC control it will ensure better signals to the decoders

Re: Tosh's loft layout
Started to lay a bit of track today and test out the DCC and it all works a treat
Impressed with the slow running over points/slips etc even the very old mainline/dapol class 56,no stuttering at all
Not very good photos, just a few quick snaps on the mobile

A quick tip
Dont leave hot soldering irons on the floor has they tend to melt trainers in a flash
or dont stand on them
