I think this is a Great Idea but I can't participate, we are packing everything away in boxes ready for a house move. But look forward to seeing results and wish you all well in your builds.
Never enough time...........

Me neither, just thought that it would be nice to have a go at something a bit different.
Once upon a time I built a model railway in the loft. Now I dabble on much smaller baseboards.

I know the base needs to be within a foot square, but how high can our diarama be?

Is the limitation just on the size of the platform area (Board etc) it is built on?

And (I know this may be applicable for some) is it the scenic area that is classed as the diorama so an off diorama track storage area is not counted? Or has it all got to fit in the same size? (I know some competitions allow an extra little piece to shunt on and off onto the scene. Other competitions do not).

Just want to clarify things before I start.

Also do trains need to run? Or is it just for looks?

Hope no one minds me asking. May be buying a few pieces of wood tomorrow... :D

personally I'd go with it can be whatever, but only a 12"x12" square is the submission to be judged, if you make something that just so happens to become functional when placed next to something else I don't think that should be against the rules

also short of some of your narrow gauge masterpieces making it actually run would be.. interesting outside maybe T gauge?

It's not strictly 1 foot square, that was only a guide that helps keep sizes within
sensible proportions. 10" x 15" fine, but really what you can find laying around.

As it's a diorama no need for any electric and I did say that even a railway subject
was not compulsory. Having said that we are a railway webforum so I would expect
some indication, even if it's just a road sign pointing to the station !!

Some of us, by choice, are including a bufferstop and I'll have a short length of almost
buried track with a bufferstop. Height ? Well how high can you go with an area of
ROUGHLY one square foot ? Me thinks a deep quarry is out of the question, or is it ??

a 12"x12" diorama, 8' high laid on its side could make a nice layout... say modelled on the side of an office building labelled "after the fall"?

I receive a communication from glencairn on the 10th of December that has me
concerned. He has gone into hospital and from the few words he said I fear that
we may never hear more from him.
I sent a short message by return and it's still sitting in my 'Out Box'.

I will put a note in the General thread.

Gentlemen,

A deadline IS a deadline.
This was launched on 15th of November and to end on 15th January.
TODAY is the 15th January.
Finished, or not, time is up.
I'll ask lofty for a today photo - if he can manage that.

It was going to be for entrants to vote.

I did wonder about requesting that an entrants favourite photo be posted here.
HOWEVER it is probably best that the last few photographs in each build thread
are used to decide on our 'Best in Show'

Recall good memories of our late friend Bufferstop AKA John Williams. RIP.

Hope no one minds me bowing out of the competition as I have not done much. How do we vote?

Right, A few days have passed since the official 'END'
As Mountain said how do we vote ?
Good question and something I've ignored due to still suffering from my flu bug.

From 5 that were going to do something we have just 2 of us that managed to cross the line.
As a result it's difficult to make a competitive voting system limited to contestants.

You can vote lofty, or Geoff T, but as I was the organiser and provided the prize it's really
not on that I should win - regardless of any votes.

So unless there are any objections I think we should announce Lofty the winner.
There are good reasons : All done from stuff laying around and therefore zero 'On Cost'.
Finished well inside the allowed time. Included 'water', A bufferstop, Non-flat landscape.
Exactly the elements for a good diorama.

So well done lofty - Must get your address and perhaps we can have a photo of the prize
sitting on the short siding.
