Here is a question I hope someone can answer. I'm modelling a 1930's steam era loco yard sandwiched between running lines and the rear of warehouses and buildings. Apart from access along the tracks themselves, would there have been pedestrian or even vehicle access, an alleyway between buildings say, to allow staff and supplies in and out?

Physical access to loco sheds
Re: Physical access to loco sheds
There has to be pedestrian access, and most would have some road access, and a bike rack. A shared access via the adjacent warehouse site is one possibility, if there is no station or other railway facility allowing controlled access to a walkway to the shed in the cess alongside the running lines. It is hard to overemphasise just how basic and straightforwardly hazardous it could be to access such a workplace.

Re: Physical access to loco sheds
one without road access is certainly possible, though it would likely have then had a small rail loading dock and crane, a lot of these places in urban areas where land was expensive go shoehorned wherever they would fit
access likely a trackside pathway, usually would have been other foot access, even it between other buildings.
though no real access would have seriously limited what would be able to be done there, however a lot of stations even with a decent loco yard not too far away would have a few sidings for locomotive storage and some basic inspection work

Thanks for the replies, your answers backed up my logic!
I'll figure out how to include an internal access through the next building along to be mocked up in front of the pits. I'm not confident of trying to create appropriate forced perspective down a separate alley between buildings, but creating a leased? passage through a building seems easier.
I've only got about 60-70mm to play with in front of the yet to be fitted backscene, so it will be tight.

Re: Physical access to loco sheds
that one is dead easy, path behind the shed and the access is "hidden" behind it, job done. just leave a gap between two of the buildings behind it. or have one of the building look like its part of the depot, admin/crew building, access is through thatcrab wrote: ↑Mon Sep 08, 2025 9:56 am Thanks for the replies, your answers backed up my logic!

Thanks, yes access behind the loco shed would work, though I need to have a sloping retaining wall leading up and to the right which would interfere with that. More decisions!

Re: Physical access to loco sheds
its more you have the access implied to be there, doesn't need to actually be modelled. when you first noted this I thought you had tracks both sides, something like the setting you have there is like quite a lot of actual urban TMD, cramped, alongside the mainline to the railway boundary then its industrial areas or depending how you model it the side of the main goods shed or warehousing

Nice shed!
