Class 08 Farish N scale Problems

Post by BrettG »

Hello All,hope your well
At the start of the year i purchased a Graham Farish Class 08 RSS (DCC Sound) loco from a LHS.
It wasnt a planned buy, just saw it,bought it.
Since at that time i didnt have track ready ,it sat in its boxed unopened for awhile.(a mistake)
When i finally tested it,well it was awful.Unresponsive and unreliable.
I could get it to run okay if i pressed it gently but as soon as stopped it would not start again.Sound too, was inconsistent.
Anyway i played around with it and eventually one of the little contacts broke off and that was it,put back in its box and determine its a loss.
But after a few months i got it out and thought i payed a lot of money for a paper weight,so i wrote a letter to Bachmann Europe(Im in Australia)
They were fantastic and said if i payed freight they would inspect and fix it.
So thats what i did.
It came back today and attached was a service report saying thet had fixed the Baseplate and ran the Loco for an hour no problems. Also a clean and oil.(all under warranty)
Now i was pleased with the service and so i put it on my layout which is sparkling clean, but alas the same problems occurred.
Unresponsive beyond use.
Ive got no reason to think Bachmann did anything but the right thing,so i figure its my end.
1.Does it not like Kato Unitrack?
2.Does it not like NCE Powercab.SB5?
Im only use to Kato Locos so this is my first Farish, and what really worries me is ive oredered 1K worth of new Loco's!

Can anyone with expereince with these Locos care to comment,i'd appreciate any feedback
Thankyou for reading the wall of text.

Ps this photo is from before i sent it away,so you see the damaged baseplate, that has been fixed.

I Googled 'Graham Farish Class 08 RSS (DCC Sound) loco' out of curiosity after reading your post and was struck by the number of people complaining about running problems. A few YouTube videos as well, like this one:

Having a look at some of the other videos on there might be some help (maybe) but likely someone else on here will have better advice.

Fact is N gauge models of small subjects such as this require the degree of mechanism refinement that the likes of Kato invest in: driven by the dominance of N gauge in Japan, and a customer expectation of very reliable performance.

There was a time when I helped a friend with N gauge, but I had to give that up some years ago, too small and fiddly for this ageing fellow, and frankly it annoyed me because the design and construction just wasn't good enough in so many of the models, and thus the reason for the owner needing help. I don't feel matters will change in the UK based on a recent statement that N now accounts for only 5% of the UK's model railway retail trade. (Much less than the frequently heard claim in the past that it was about 20%, which I already had some doubts about, given the declining shelf space I have lately been seeing it given in model shops...)
