Unable to access the site from home

Post by Ken Shabby »

Hi,
I'm writing this on a train.
I've been unable to access the site from home for about 5 days. I assumed the site was down, but I can now see this is not the case. I've just messaged my wife at home, and asked her to try again. She confirmed she couldn't access the site .
Any ideas what the problem is ?

Thanks
Ken

I would try deleting all Cookies, Cache and Browsing history via your browser's settings menu. Then try again - you will need to log in with your username and password though.

Could be a number of reasons for this. What message do you get when trying to access this site but are prevented from doing so? Some websites do not allow multiple simultaneoas logins even on different devices and the answer there is to log out of one before loging in on the other.

Have you tried logging in using 'incognito' or 'private' mode within your browser as well as plain normal mode? Does that work?

Do you recollect doing any updates or downloads prior to no longer being able toaccess the site? For example, did you or has there been an automatic update of your browser or antivirus etc?

Many browsers now come with built in and activated 'tracking' blockers. These effectively block cookies and other software tracking which websites you visit and related pop up adverts. The highest blocking feature can and does stop the browser working so it looks like the website is at fault.

Similarly, antivirus updates can change the preferred settings one my have on their device. Even updates to your router by your internet provider can cause issues although it is extremely rare for this to affect only one website.

If anyone isnt confident to access your browser settings and change these, then often a clearing of cache, cookies and history may resolve the issue. If not, further investigation is needed.

This site does not allow anyone to log in unless they have clicked on "Accept all cookies" when one gets asked the cookie question. If one has clicked "Essential cookies only" one can not log into the site. (Have learned this in the past. Other sites using this same platform are the same in that one must accept all cookies to access the site as a member. One may view the site with "Essential cookies only" but not access the site. I hope this makes sense?
Most sites I am on allow one to access the site with the "Essential cookies only" option, so I assume it has something to do with the type of platform the site runs on?
I love this site though cookies and all! :D

Morning,
I'm on the train again. This is the message that comes up on the screen when trying to access the site at home.

This happens on all the phones and computers at our home address.

This isn't strictly correct, I am logged in and I don't accept cookies, essential cookies are automatically accepted.

Is it only this website where the message displays or others? Are you trying to access via a bookmark?

Try accessing the site from a google search link and if that doesnt work, try https://www.newrailwaymodellers.co.uk/ and click on the Forums link and see if that works.

If all devices at home get this message, then there's an issue with your antivirus, firewall settings or router.

Unless all devices run the same AV, Id turn off the router \ modem and leave off for 5 minutes before switching back on.

If that makes no difference, in turn I would temporarily disable any AV and see if that changes anything and if not, then temporarily disable the firewall. Remember to clear cookies and history at each step before trying to access the site.

If that doesnt work, you may want to try clearing the DNS cache as follows: In Windows, open a Command Prompt as an administrator and type ipconfig /flushdns, then press Enter. This command will clear the DNS resolver cache, removing any outdated or incorrect DNS information. You'll see a confirmation message if the process is successful

This vid may help if your browser is Chrome. https://youtu.be/a71wANPgYsM?si=EVb1HfOy15jNd7G2

It looks as though something at home via the WiFi router is blocking access. Do all other sites load ok?
What happens if you switch off WiFi on the phone when at home, are you able to connect via mobile data?
Have you carried out the suggested browser cache, history and cookies deletion and reset?

have seen this with some providers when they have "child friendly" filtering enabled, basically any site the provider hasn't heard of gets blocked

This error is quite common in Chrome apparently! Seems to be caused when a website doesnt support an SSL version but also browser extension and firewall.

Here's 3 ways to fix the problem in the following link.

Thanks to everyone that offered advice.
My wife ran various tests over last weekend, and it seems our IP address has been blocked by the website. I've messaged one of the administrators so hopefully this can be sorted out. In the meantime, I can access the site at home If I use my phone data instead of our Internet.
