Was limestone used for roads and Goods yard surface material

Post by crab »

I'm trying to replicate an LMS 1930's country town setting and am keen to know if crushed limestone was often used for road and goods yard surfacing. Looking at old B&W photos (cant find any colour ones) such as https://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/EPW024041, these surfaces appear very pale, so possibly limestone? Does anyone know?

According to Google AI, it can be used as aggregate for road bases so possibly!

Wouldn't surprise me as a low cost top dressing, as there's plentiful supply in much of the UK. I have seen film of early motoring with the pale road surface and the dust cloud thrown up behind the passing vehicles.
