Re: Stourford
This is exciting - funnily enough years ago I started planning a similar fictional scenario where the Stourbridge branch was extended beyond the town basin and all the way up to Wombourne via Ashwood and K'ford. Alas I lost the board in a garage leak just as I got a space to develop something - excited to see how you go!
Re: Stourford
I've had a few layouts when I was younger but nothing serious. Had a small oval layout under my loft bed years ago with some scenery on but took that down due to needing space in the bedroom. Had the opportunity to make a larger double track oval in the attic but that didn't last long as my parents wanted the attic space back for storage. Ended up starting an end to end layout back in the early 2010s on a couple of old plywood sheets which I did have a thread on here for. That got taken apart and everything went into storage as I was going into the Army back in 2012 but got medically discharged in 2014 so came back home.janine05 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 04, 2024 11:04 pm Wow AJFE a lot of hard work has gone into this so far. I've just read through the whole thread. There is a lot I don't understand but I can see a lot of time and effort has been put into this. You've been building railway sets for a long time by the looks of it?

It's only really been the past couple of years that I've been able to start having a proper go at building a layout as I've got more space available and the money to do it. Did look at building a small portable layout or a foldown layout for my bedroom before but never got round to starting the layouts however, I did build up 2 2ftx4ft boards that I kept in the attic for when I did start. One of these had their frame reused for a house project by my dad but I've managed to reuse the plywood top of one of them for this layout and the remaining frame got cut down to make the traversing fiddle yard so they've finally got to be part of a layout.
So although I haven't spent a long time building layouts, I've spent longer collecting models and kits in readiness for when I did start building again so I've managed to amass plenty of locos, coaches and wagons which are a mix of ready to run or kits to be built. I've probably spent longer making the kits than building the layout but it's enjoyable all the same.
Re: Stourford
Mini update as I haven't done anything major to the layout other than sorting out the wiring and ballasting the trackwork as I've been busy with work and Uni. Have done some work to the station board with the goods yard now being covered with cobblestone sheeting and the platforms built up ready for installation. Also got hold of a Ratio Yard Office building for use as the weighbridge hut as it's close enough to the GWR style I'm looking for and goes with the etched metal GWR weighbridge piece I've gotten hold of from a sales stand. Currently holding off fixing the platforms in place as I have been mulling over fitting platform lamps and station building interior lights and would need to drill holes in the board prior to platform fixing. With regards to the station building itself, I didn't want to use anything that was a generic kit on the layout and wanted to have something inspired by my local area. So over the past month and with the kind permission of the ladies running "The Platform Cafe" in Wombourne, I have been taking photos and getting "rough" footprint dimensions of the building to enable me to make a 4mm scale model of Wombourne Station for use at Stourford.

So far I've built up the main walls of the building as accurate as I can get to the original and will need to sort out windows, doors, roof and chimney stacks along with the platform canopy. Will consider internal walls as-well for interior light purposes. The other option I did have for my Station Building was Tettenhall Station which apart from the small waiting room on the disused platfrom, all the other buildings have been perfectly preserved. So I could have used that one instead but it is smaller than Wombourne as the Booking Office was a separate building. Additionally, the Tettenhall Museum of Transport based inside the Goods Shed has a working model layout of Tettenhall Station which is nice to look at but I'd rather do something that hasn't already been done. What I will do however is make my own scale model of Tettenhall Goods Shed as again I want something unique from the Wombourne Branchline and not a generic kit on my layout. With the permission of the Museum's Volunteers, I have been able to take photos of the original plans of the building and will have a crack at building it the same way as the Station Building.
Carrying on with the buildings theme, I have made a start on the engine shed and this is based on a mashup of dimensions of Didcot's Shed and the original 4 road shed at Stourbridge MPD and visually based on Stourbridge. So far I have produced the exterior walls using Metcalfe red brick sheets along with blue engineering brick to emboss where the layers are and will need to acquire suitable windows that are visually similar to what Stourbridge had. The shed ends did have wooden slats underneath the roof gables and I will be reproducing this with thick card I've gotten from document envelopes to be painted over once glued together. Will be looking at acquiring painted white brick sheets to do the interior of the shed and will also need to get hold of Slate and Tile Roofing sheets to do all the buildings. Photos to come when I've made decent progress.

Very neat work! I thought it was a kit until you said it wasn't!
