I have been given these trains

Post by Swanny77 »

I have been given these Hornby sets as a gift, as I have no room in my home to build a model railway I am looking for a valuation in these. The guy who gave them to me has had them for around 20 years or so he said, they are brand new and still in their original packaging. The Flying Scotsman looks fantastic. so please if anyone has any idea of what head are worth i would appreciate your help.

What is the "R" number on the end of the box? there are a few versions of this loco out there and value differs a bit between them

one is "DCC Ready" and is a bit more modern, there is a similar not DCC ready one and an older one still with the motor in the tender

if looking to stick on eBay having the R... number and knowing which helps for the description

R3086 have seen on ebay for about £40 - £75 so quite a range

older ones can be had for less, main problem with these being they have been in so many sets they are not exactly "rare" and short of renumbering not much point having more than one

this is the earlier of the two railroad ones, not advertised as DCC ready (can be fitted, but involves soldering)

fair few on ebay, listings I saw are between £32 and £90, mine is the other Railroad one and IIRC I paid about £50, this one is probably £35-£50 as a realistic value in good condition, higher end if its unused and has the accessory bits with it in the box (bag of black plastic bits)

Here is one for sale secondhand at a dealer.

Yours is a fine example, so anyone wanting one will likely want to go for this one. Unfortunately the Flying Scotsman has been one of the most popular models for such a long time that the market prices are somewhat lower than other models. Dealers don't offer much as they then have to add VAT and also their own profits before they sell them on, but I would not sell it for lower than around £35 as that would be your bottom line. Yours seems to be around £65 at dealers from the looks of it, making £45-£50 an average price. Hope that helps? Is just a rough idea of value as values will vary quite a lot.

Most potential buyers will want it to be in running condition. Easiest way to test is with a PP9 9V battery, the terminals are neatly spaced so that applied to the driven wheels - one terminal each side - the motor should run. If it doesn't run then offer it as 'spares and repairs' at £30.
