N gauge bridge clearance

I'm currently planning my layout and I'm looking at having a section of track rise up, cross another section before pulling in to a station. How much do I need to raise the section in order to cross another track still allowing trains to pass freely underneath?

Height of trackbed plus railhead plus height of tallest loco \ rolling stock plus 5mm at a guess Id say!

important question, what sort of trains?

if you run anything with a pantograph, even if you don't actually have or want wires - you want more space in case it moves.

otherwise its basically measure it and see

for reference the Metcalfe kits have 44mm high arches

I have been given an N gauge American 4-4-0 for Christmas. I have no track so I don't know track height, but the loco itself sitting on a flat surface is around 30mm high at he highest point (Its chimney). So add about 4mm for the rack height and an extra mm for clearance, and one has at least 35mm needed as a minimum. I would add a little more to be safe. Hope this helps?

The loco I have is the smallest loco on the right.

Thanks! In my plans I've been using 50mm clearance, so hopefully that will be enough. Once I start to build, I will make checking this my first job, I can increase the height slightly if needed
