Bachmann also want to sell you a Brush 2 TOPS 30/31

Post by Bigmet »

Far and away the most successful of all BR's pilot scheme diesels. Every modeller of BR to near present should have some. Looks like Bach may have the cab shape correct...

And fitted with Bachmann's new, automatic tension lock uncoupling. Looks and seems to work well. Shame it uses horrid tension locks though!

BTW, when you say the 30/31 was a roaring success, could you expend the whys anf wherefors?

Yeah, so good they had to re-engine the whole lot after ~10 years.

I think the class 20 would have good argument for being the most successful pilot scheme engine.

Robust design conferred its length of time in service, and found capable of considerable power output upgrade when experimentation toward power unit replacement was found necessary. (Crews liked it too, the ride comfort was appreciated.)

But then again, the robust frame design meant this was practical.

Clearly, the only other contender. The Brush 2 wins points for its additional capability, inherent to the twin cab format and space for train heat provision; the EE type 1 for simple and robust. Choose your horse?

Today I chose both horses, the new EE type1 (class 20) as well as the Brush 2 (class 30) I had ordered, both in the all over BR green, late crest livery in which they entered service. Very pleased with both, look like the subjects, excellent running straight out of the box; though the Brush has one (turned out to be 2, I blame my variable asigmatism) pick up wiper not making contact, I will fix that when the decoder is installed after test running is complete. The weight of this model will give it traction way beyond what is required, it will pull like a Heljan EE type 2 (Baby Deltic) would be my guess.

Both now decoderised, usual transformation from good running on DC, very refined on DCC. Everything to like on both models. Both will move trainloads well beyond the number of vehicles they were usually seen with in regular service.

Been undertaking the detailed set up of both the 20 and 30 for speed range and accelerations, and I was particularly interested to find how low I had to set CV5 and CV6 on the 30 to get it down to 70mph maximum and 35mph at mid scale. Both run extremely smoothly and quietly, all there is to hear is the wheels on the rails. Both pull very well, the Brush wiil race along with 20 carriages, very unrealistic. Having acquired 10 hours running time, pretty safe to consider them both safely out of the infant mortality zone,

Tomorrow- time permitting - lighting set up on the Brush; more lights to adjust (= dim right down) than an average size fairground attraction! I may pull out a plug or two to see if that's the better path to lights I will never want working...

Yup, unplugged the cab and engine room lights on the Brush 2, who wants those? Put matching colour dots on plugs and sockets for restoration. Haven't looked at the EE type 1, yet; having too much fun running in a friend's 'new' Bachmann Pullman car set which have clearly never been out of their boxes while in the previous owner's hands, and getting it all properly close coupled, particularly to a spare Hornby Pullman brake, what I just happened to have going spare....
