Are there many women/ladies into the model railway hobby?

Post by Horus200 »

Hi all.

I'd just like to ask out of genuine interest.

Are there any women into the hobby of model railways or is it just a guy thing?

If so do you have a layout?

Also do you like any of the preserved lines around the country/world?

I've been to an exhibition once a year over the last 2 years & whilst I've seen women there I've never figured out if they are actually into the hobby or just going along with boyfriend, hubby, kids or there part of a business selling things at a stall.

I know it's a long shot asking but I always feel you never know what goes on behind closed doors & you can never presume what others like, do, are into.

There are a few, its like tabletop wargaming, Women do appear and participate, just much more likely to keep a low profile sadly. Fair few women with railway youtube channels

Am primarily building a layout because wifey wants to play trains but is no good building one! Yes, it's mainly men but a sizable minority in the hobby are women.

Thanks to all whom have responded to me.

I guess some women would keep it quiet about being into model railways. End of the day it's their choice in my book, each to their own.

I just hope the ones who are into it enjoy it.

Wishing everyone a great rest of the weekend, stay safe & well whatever you're doing.

Hi Janine,

Often the ladies use their artistic & practical skills in scenery.
I see you're 'New' here, find postings from Jaz, her weathering can be quite extreme
towards the clapped out look of over-worked wagons & such. She is also so very good
at making natural looking and believable cameo scenes
My wife likes our occasional trips on heritage railways and recalls as a youngster getting
on to the foot-bridge and enjoying the smoke from the then steam traffic passing under.
She will tolerate part-built railway stuff hanging around, but used to complain when it was
aircraft stuff !!
Have fun living for a while in your 'dream' world, you need to escape the real world for a
while to protect your sanity !!

Hi Janine.

Welcome to this site.

I'm new here too.

It's good to hear you help your neighbour with his layout. It's also kind of you to help out.

I'm sure your gentle touch helps with the artistic side of the buildings, figures & set.
Plus I'm sure your fashion studies could/do help with painting the outfits on the figures too, whatever era your neighbours layout is set in.

Keep up the good work.

Anyone here got a 3D printer? I've never used one but seen one used, they are so cool.

Janine
have two of the things, one of the ones that uses plastic string and one that uses liquid resin. not hard to use, do take up a fair bit of space though and you do need gloves, masks, ventilation etc.

I got them for table top wargaming as its cheaper to buy one than to by the models I've made. will be getting railway bits out of them, which may include people as I may need quite a few.

quality from them is amazing, and I only have cheap ones

needs a proper 3d scanner to capture actual people, something I don't have.

I more got the thing to print stuff like buildings, in my own ham fisted way I can model a building.. I mean its blocks...

have done 28mm & 6 mm models for gaming, roughly 1:48 and 1:285 scale stuff that comes out fine. then gets tortured with a paint brush

@Janine.

You're welcome. 3d figure of you eh. It would be 😎 cool to have one of yourself on the layout.

Hope someone can help you with that someday.

Have a great rest of the day.

Answering OPs original question. My two granddaughters are interested in trains. The older one has an American themed garden layout.
The younger one helps with running my Sovereign Street layout. Also she loves 1.1 stuff.

Here she is operating Sovereign Street

We don't ask and you can use any name you want for display purposes. The one place I can see a hint is in the email address, but I suspect there are quite a few fellas who borrow their wife's/partner's account.
