I can see why some people would want their phone or tablet or PC to run their trains from and I do not want to stop them as for them it add an element of fun! Is just that if it was to attract me or others then it needs a physical hand controller option. (I am speaking in the theory of attracting me to buy such a device. I essentially do not have any issues with the idea and the using a computer device, though I personally do not want to go down that route as I don't really understand what apps are etc., but for me, I know I would need a physical element of control as looking at a touch screen to control my trains from is not going to impress me. To alter CV's or do more technical things on then I do see why it would add to the experience as it makes things easier, BUT for ordinary train control it is a 100% turn off as for me, there are better options of the basic erganomics of train control. Add a physical hand controller as an option and then the control system catches my interest. Not saying I would buy because for me, lets say I buy into radio control, I want a hand controller that is very simple and uncluttered and easy to use. (I would normally buy a second complex one to adjust all the elements I need to adjust, but for every day use I would revert back to the simple version as I want a carefree and uncomplicated control that has the erganomic physical feel if that makes sense?)).

Agreed Mountain.
I want a physical "hands on" approach to 'play trains'. :)
Thanks

I am sure that it can be done. Maybe some small backyard company can make one as an add on accessory if Hornby don't go down that route themselves?

If the phone has a headset jack you can "read" a variable potentiometer for speed setting via the microphone input. Just needs someone to write the routine into the app.

So you speak and the locos speed increases?

That's already been done, by some techie, model train enthusiast.
He controlled his trains by voice, using a headset.
It must have been 10 years ago. There was a web site and a YouTube video if I remember correctly.

ESU have managed to combine a touch screen with a physical control knob and some actual buttons.
The Mobile Control 2 wireless handset.
It can be used with both their ECoS and CabControl DCC systems.

Nice. Very nice indeed!

(I am still loving making things simple and building my own controller BUT, I am impressed with the last link so I like what I see.. So it looks like Hornby are onto something nice!)
