There are two choices:
Find a crane or two you like and place them where you like. If there is more than one best not to place them with the jib arcs superimposed. Or,
Make a decision on the traffic that was worked in and out, and the road vehicle routes at the location, and install an appropriate crane in a good location* for moving it from rail vehicle to hardstanding and/or road vehicle, and vice-versa. (*Or a bad location, because commercial facilities were often laid out for task A, and within a few years tasks A, B, C and D have been and gone, and now the current tasks E and F are awkward to perform, because Messrs Hardnutt and Tytewadd's feelings about expenditure start with 'None of that'.

What's definitely missing is an end on dock. There's road vehicles on a wagon in the photograph which can simply be driven on or off with a short ramp between vehicle and dock. A line to the centre of the right hand end of 'the platform' perhaps?

If you wish to be pedantic about the type of crane used, you have to apply the same considerations as the original designer. If there's plenty of ground space you use a mobile crane which can move freely and rotate. If space is at a premium you use an overhead crane which has a bridge supported on elevated rails at either side of the yard. With the lifting mechanism moving from side to side across the bridge. This can work in far tighter spaces.
BTW my uncle met his wife at the factory where he worked, during WW2. She was the 18yr old lady overhead crane driver.
Growing old, can't avoid it. Growing up, forget it!

Yep, I was kind of referring to thing modeled rather than the picture. Though it is course a lovely picture too. It looks the part and 'makes sense' if you see what I mean. I'm now wondering about my Stuff siding... I haven't got any Stuff tank wagon kits yet, but I do fancy a bogie bolster... long pipes, a crane or like that or two... (my inner crane is coming out).
