Any recommendations??

Post by Geordie088 »

Hello all.

I'm looking for a good model railway shop near Reading. I'm happy to travel a reasonable distance to get to one.
Thd best I can see is the one in Alton.
Any suggestions would be most welcome for other shops?

Cheerio!

Kernow at Guildford are about the same distance - although it probably boils down to what you consider to be a "good model railway shop" - it depends on whether you are looking for a trainset shop, a bargain shop for rolling stock, or a serious kitbuilders/scratch materials shop etc..

Thanks for this guys (hello E2E again!).
I have looked at that site so have picked up a few from there. Ideally, I would like a railway warehouse where they have everything under one roof. However, I am a realist and know, this is unlikely as all the shops I’ve seen over the years are pretty small. Just wondering if anyone had any preferences for somewhere that had a good all round range. Guess it may be trial and error as usual!

The only one I visit that's more like a warehouse is Gaugemaster in Ford near Arundel.
It's a horribly clinical place and bargains are Scotch mist but if you just want to look at things in the flesh before perhaps buying them somewhere else cheaper, they have masses of stock.
If you make it part of a day out, Arundel itself is a lovely old place with an amazing Castle to visit (I'd definitely recommend it - One of the best I've visited) and on a river to boot.

The road Gaugemaster is on runs North to south. At one end Arundel at the other end your almost on the beach! :D

And if you have any naughty but genteel friends currently vacationing at HM's pleasure, you can have a chat with them in the vicinity of Ford open prison. Interesting place...

Gaugemaster don't discount their own lines because they won't undercut their stockists. They stated as much in one of the regular "why is it the same price from the manufacturer?' threads on another site years ago.

not near you but online try the Locomotion Railway Museum, part of the NRM, York, for good deals, I recently purchased a limited edition Black 5, cheaper than any other online shop, https://www.locomotion.org.uk/

If you know what you want Great Eastern Models of Norwich generally match box shifter prices.
The have a FB selling page which flags their current bargains but they do not have an on-line shop. You have to ring up (01603 431457) and either collect from the shop or they will post stuff out.
