Is the name that you are looking for Edward Thompson, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway?

It is.Lancastrian wrote:Is the name that you are looking for Edward Thompson, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway?
Sir Nigel Gresley's passing was very unexpected, and the LNER had no immediate successor in mind. The LNER board of directors first requested permission from Southern Railway to approach their chief mechanical engineer, OVS Bulleid, who had been Gresley's assistant until joining the Southern four years previously. Permission was granted, but he declined the offer. J.F. Harrison, the man later largely responsible for the design of No.71000 "Duke of Gloucester", was the popular choice. However, at 42 years old, it was considered inappropriate for someone so young to take the post. The LNER board then turned to Arthur Peppercorn for the CME role, but Thompson held seniority amongst other LNER officials and used this political experience to sidestep Peppercorn and take the title of CME.
Over to you Lancastrian.

Thanks Glencairn, I didn't need the clue I was holding back for someone else to answer.
OK then, let's keep it simple:
In relation to railways what is a Possession?

It has been open long enough. Time to close it. Possession?
A period of time when one or more tracks are closed for maintenance. For the duration of work a person in charge of possession (PICOP) has control of the line. When work is complete the possession is relinquished and control of the line handed back to the signaller.

A protected section of rail. It is a way of making sure that a line is safe to work on during engineering work, using signals, detonators or track circuits.
Once agail it's over to you, Glencairn.

A locomotive incorporating the improvements incorporated into Robert Stephenson's Northumbrian, what we now regard as a conventional steam loco. Firebox boiler and smokebox in one unit, near horizontal cylinders, multi tube boiler, driven and fired from footplate at the firebox end.

Right or wrong, that is the answer that I had. If it's correct it's over to Bufferstop.

That's too technical for me. Sorry, but not the answer I am after.Bufferstop wrote:A locomotive incorporating the improvements incorporated into Robert Stephenson's Northumbrian, what we now regard as a conventional steam loco. Looking at the Pacific or Atlantic could lead to this older novelty.

Bufferstop didn't hit the buffers with the correct answer.Bufferstop wrote:Any Loco of the R Stephenson 0-2-2 arrangement. eg Rocket, Northumbrian etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whyte_notation
The 0-2-2 or Northumbrian wheel arrangement appears to have been first used on locomotives taking part in the Rainhill Trials of 1829. John Ericsson and John Braithwaite's Novelty, was an 0-2-2 well tank locomotive although both the driving wheels and trailing wheels were the same size. However, the most famous 0-2-2 was Stephenson's Rocket, which was the only locomotive to complete the trials successfully.
The type was subsequently used by Robert Stephenson and Company on eight locomotives supplied to the Liverpool and Manchester Railway after 1829:, Meteor, Comet, Dart, Arrow, Phoenix, North Star, Northumbrian, and Majestic.
Over to you Bufferstop.
