Frankland: N gauge Southern Railway

Stunning work Mark... the essence of suburban London. I'd love a layout like this, if I had the space. Have you ever thought about contacting Model Railway Journal to see if they'd do an article on Frankland? The quality and atmosphere of your work would certainly interest them.

My little effort has had mod's even saying I might be carrying on N modelling like you and ParleNd.

For some while I have been working on 3 sets of orginal LSWR 3-Subs. One will be in LSWR livery, two will be in early SR livery.

Progress can be found here, and is linked in my signature.

Some vintage film of the units I am making can be found here.

Rest assured there will be a special newsreel released on completion of the project.

Well here's an interim update of sorts for those that solely inhabit NRM ...

Aeroplane Trip Over Frankland


Back in July I had a rather exciting day. I went on one of those novelty "Afternoon Aeroplane Tea Trips" that are all the rage at the moment. I went because this particular flight was over Frankland. And what an experience it was!


It did cost £2/2/0 - and I know that's a week's wages for many people - but sometimes you have to push-the-boat-out a bit.



We were greeted by the steward as we boarded the aeroplane.






It was an Armstrong Whitworth Argosy which apparently can fly at over 90mph!


As we flew over Frankland we were served finger-sandwiches, tea, and cakes.






All quite delightful and what a thing to actually be in an aeroplane!






Apart from a few clouds we had a good view - and I saw a train below hauled by a locomotive I hadn't seen around Frankland before ...







... I thought to myself I'll have to research what that locomotive was when I get home.







So when I got home I got out my collection of Cigarette Cards.






Here's what I've got so far ... (anyone up for swops? )


Anyway - I think card No. 11 is the locomotive I saw ....





And it's been happily trundling around Frankland ever since.

I quite liked the cigarette cards, so since then have been collecting more.




From top line to bottom are:

Series No 1: Southern Railway Steam Locomotives
Series No 2: Southern Railway Electric Trains
Series No 3: Southern Railway Rolling Stock
Series No 4: Things To See From The Train
And the last three are just adverts.

As you can see there are gaps, to be filled in the future Want to guess what they are?
The backs of course have detailed information which makes them all the more interesting again.

Apart from that I've been working on my three LSWR electric units: The Great-Grandfathers of modern-day third rail EMUs

They've taken longer than expected, but then again it's all new territory for me as I'm learning (and making mistakes) as I go.

Out of curiosity, what is your hat of preference?

Personally I quite like relaxing in a simple cap, and a Homberg for semi-formal occasions. For more workaday situations a Straw Boater seems the most appropriate

I only wear a hat when offshore sailing and that is a Breton Cap

But my great uncle albert was a man for hat's - always a trilby - a jaunty chap.

I also seem to remember that he had some of those cigarette cards, he told me he never managed to get all of them, something to do with a postal strike I think.

Good to see an update of one of my favourites

Lovely update and as exquisite as ever! On taking off one's hat, I found a newspaper advertisement here for some new fangled hats from the Americas!

For the minute detail; do have a special magnifying glasses or similar. I am always amazed at the details and how they are achieved.
