Possibly a silly question but which plaster is best, normal finishing plaster (skim coat) or browning/bonding (undercoat) ? I can also insulate underneath with rockwool or similar if it proves noisy, my last layout was built on cabinets so was pretty quiet. Mainly i was hoping to use the polystyrene to allow me to make contours without having to do an open frame.
I have just completed a small section of hillside and I used a mixture of the normal finishing plaster (skim coat) and browning/bonding in different areas, I found that the finishing plaster was dry and able to be coated in about 24hours, the brown plaster is still not completely set!

The problem you will find with using ordinary plaster or bonding is that it may crack when moved. Simply spreading plaster on a layout may at first look fine but long term there will be issues. You definitely need to use a reenforced type plaster that has a bandage in it. Modroc is the most common for modellers. You don't need to do any mixing and it can be applied immediately and shaped straight away.It can be bought on ebay in great lengths rather than in model shops which usually works out more expensive.

Great idea Dugie ... I have just tried it myself on my new layout and it works very well...

For glueing the polystyrene together, I simply used ordinary PVA glue.
This was then filled slightly with lightweight filler, sometimes watered down a little to make it flow.

Good luck with your layout, and remember to post some pictures! :D
