I personally would of gone for either Princess Lizzie (espically being Diamond Jubliee year), Earl Barthurst (Just because I like castle classes), Sir Nigel (Everyone loves an A4), Tornado (if you want to sell "Best of British" Tornado would do that"), City of Truro (one of the oldest locos and prettiest) or even Britannia (dont acutally like BR standards but the name is very fitting)

Tornado would have been a good option due to the recent (well, fairly recent) press coverage, people know what it is, and shows us Brits haven't totally lost all old engineering skills!

Britannia would also be very fitting with the name I agree...

I think the use of a Royal Scot loco is acceptable!

Tornado is probably booked up visiting Heritage Railways and Rail Tours.

City of Truro.... I have no idea where or what it's doing.

Sir Nigel, I believe has been in repairs and again probably has it's own commitments along with Princess Elizabeth & Castle Class locos which again is probably booked up

I would have though 46100 "Royal Scot" Would have been another loco worthy of carrying the Torch but I have no idea what, or where this loco is.

I don't honestly think the general public are that bothered what train carries it. Obviously those who follow railways as a hobby are, but meh, you'd only get people moaning it wasn't allocated to a tour and also... with all the media there, is there really any space for the "Surge" of rail enthusiasts taking photos as well? It's not just the British media, its the WORLD! not enough space for everybody especially on our small island :D

could they not do a sort of 15 guinei special or have one loco from each of the big four double head i.e. kingarthur & king george v takes the torch half way then tornado & princess elizabeth take it the rest of the way
THIS IS A BAD IDEA,

BUT IM ALL ABOUT BAD IDEAS

I dont know

I just get the impression that it was choosen to add "fame" to the locomotive to sell future rail tours

I might be well off the mark but thats jsut the feeling I get from it

Choosing 46115 is a little strange but i suppose they chose that over some top link, overly famous loco such as 60163 or 60007 because West Coast must have given them a good deal?
Now to clear up a few things in the last posts:
3717 City of Truro has just returned to use on the NRM's shuttles after a retube, she hasn't been on the mainline since 2005.
(4)6100 Royal Scot is still under restoration, okay she ran in 2009 at the West Somerset and Llangollen but lots of problems were found afterwards and she is still at Crewe, boiler out of the frames i think.
Madmack, the 15 Guinea Special did not have a loco from each big four company, it was 3 LMS Black Fives (45110, 44871 and 44781) and a BR britannia class (70013 Oliver Cromwell) plus King George V hasn't steamed for several years so would not be able to haul anything. Neither would King Arthur as that was scrapped in the 60s!

Its in this months Steam railway magazine 4472 is still in line for the Olympic tourch run.
hence why its been replaced by mallard at Barrow Hill to get the work completed.
they are admiting its tight now tho
An just to reopen the can of worms on the speed debate ask the driver of tornado who was fired last year how quick he was going.
as thats the reason A1 steam had him removed it was over the 100 mark.
i was told 115 an there was "fair bit left"

an just back to 4472 how long we reckon the investigation in to spiralling costs will take?

I'm a bit confused now, if Flying Scotsman is not going to be July at the Earliest, then how is it going on a test run from Bury to York on May 31st? Or has that been cancelled too?
I'm not bothered about it not been ready for Barrow hill, I would rather have Mallard there lol. Shame I won't be able to ride behind FS at Barrow hill, but there is always still Tornado and Dominion of New Zealand/Bittern.
Also, sorry to go of topic, but has Dominion of New Zealand/Bittern been put back to the name Bittern now but stayed in the Same livery? I herd it had but just wanted to check.

I'm not that bothered which loco pulls the Olympic torch, as long as it's steam! lol
