Well I'm finally in a position to start building a board to run all my stock on. It's a right mix of stock as you'll see, mostly what my dad could get for a reasonable price as we went along when I was a kid. The whole lot's been in store for most of the last 2 decades; buildings, locos and stock. I've added a few things recently, but I thought it was about time I made a start resurrecting my locos and stock as I should have a decent table and some boards arriving soon. Firstly let me introduce the 'inmates'

Image
As I said, a right mixture!

Priority freight! the Watney's beer wagon! ;)
Image
Recently acquired 9F with some ancient Tri-Ang rolling stock.
Image
0-6-0 with recently built from kit Dapol crane. I had a shabby Hornby flatbed and even shabbier Tri-ang brake which, suitably modified, accompany it nicely I think
Image
My pair of 9F's
Image
It's not just British though. I hope to get the Tri-ang running one day, the SNCF runs beautifully though and is light equipped
Image
Close up of the Frenchman. Don't worry I have ze missing buffer!

More once I've the boards etc. out, and start on with the tracklaying! :)

A good selection of stock and nice variety also should give you plenty of options
when you start your layout build.

I know it's a bit of an eclectic collection, but I have a cunning plan which should result in a just about feasable layout!

Well, the build start has been delayed due to the table the layout's going to live on not being delivered yet. Also I've not been able to acquire the boards I'm after, but that's a work in progress. Meanwhile, I've been preparing and repairing the scenery. All the Superquick buildings are now restored and ready to go, they survived remarkably well. I'll just have to add a few new chimney pots as some have gone walkies. Also, while digging through some of my stuff at my parents' house, I found an Airfix house my dad had built which lived on my old layout. It's been rebuilt, repainted and is just waiting for drainpipes now.
Image
I also found this Davric Foden tipper Dad had built, it was originally in Tilcon colours but I've given it a bit of a spruce up too.
Image
Now, it's been my intent since day one that there's going to be a scrap merchants yard on this layout as I have a morbid curiosity for such things, so I've prepared some aircraft 'remains' for the yard. Bonus points to anyone (apart from DonB!) who can work out what aircraft they are/were!
Image
'But what about the trains?' I hear you cry! Well I decided D9003 'Meld' should have a makeover for its second career with me, so out with the yellow paint...
Image
Tamiya tape let me down a bit with the masking, but it doesn't look bad at all in real life. A few touch ups are needed admittedly though.
And finally the weathering on the 9F 'waiting to be restored' is complete. This will sit next to the steam shed patiently waiting its turn, eventually.
Image
Hopefully the next update will involve a table, some large pieces of wood, a hammer and trackpins!

Progress! The layout's table and baseboard are now set up! Progress should start in earnest at the weekend. Photos to upload, either later or more likely tomorrow...

Cheers Chief, I think it looks pretty damn good! :)

Well folks, the madness has begun. The baseboard is built, measures about 6ft by 8ft. I know that's little compared to some on here, but it's all space/budget will allow. For now...
Image
I couldn't resist getting the battlefleet out for a look-see at its new home!
Image

Image
The big diesels, back in their shed for the first time in nearly 20 years
Image
This shed will eventually be the preserved steam shed, as the diesels will get a shiny new shed.
A view along the platforms. I'll be adding to the station as it's a bit small, but my original is a good basis to start from
Image
So the cunning plan will be, a larger version of the current station, a large outer loop, a smaller inner loop, diesel shed, preserved steam shed/museum, coal drop and a bit of a fiddle yard. The plan may change, depending what goodies I pick up at Lincoln in a couple of weeks time!
And finally, some of the keener eyed of you may have noticed this little chap in some of the above photos.
Image
He has been christened Bert the Hornbill by my better half (she's also been tasked with coming up with a name for the layout) and I thought it'd be fun to make sure he appears somewhere in at least one pic in each update I post here, sort of an internet forum version of Cuneo's mouse! Have fun looking for him :)

Indeed he is E2V. Bert will be inspecting a different bit of the layout in the next progress report :D
By the way, the wonky chimney on the station has been straightened. It won't get it's pots back until it's less likely that works will mean they get knocked back off though!

"The baseboard is built, measures about 6ft by 8ft...." HOW will you reach the back corner?!

The whole rig will stand about 1ft away from the wall, and I'm still young enough and nimble enough (just!) to scuttle under it to work on t'other side if and when I need to. It was photographed pushed back against the wall temporarily while I got busy with the hoover.

No worries. I'm also blessed with reasonably long arms, unless it's my round in which case it's the traditional Yorkshire 'short arms, long pockets' tactic!
I've already ensured I can reach all the board; if necessary I'll trot down the airfield and borrow the giraffe!

I remember it was one of the first wagons I got, my dad came home one day with it, one of the tankers and some of the coal trucks.
It all started with the Deltic, 2 green coaches and a loop of track on the carpet, all bought second hand in 1980-something.......
