Klein Modellbahn - Zinc Rot issue?

Post by FSMan »

Hello to you all. Some years ago I purchased a Klein Modellbahn HO model of an Austrian loco OBB1142.593, It ran beautifully and everything worked fine - an absolute gem. :D Like many perhaps, since then I collected several more locos and looked forward to the time when I finally started to built my own layout. Now that the track is down I've been running my locos ...and this one, although the lights and motors run, it didn't move. On taking the shell off, the zinc-type chassis was so brittle that it broke into various pieces and no drive was possible to the bogies. Anyone know where I can get another metal chassis for this?...as emails to the (new?) Klein owners in Austria have not been answered. :x Thank you.

Probably easier to make a new one, if you still have the pieces of thge broken one use them as a template for a new one.

Thanks for your very quick reply. I've tried to 'superglue' the bits - not succesful - and I'm trying to think of a way to rebuild the complete chassis (one end to the other needed) using thickish plastic card, I dare say it's dooable, in time, but I have no knowledge of the process you are suggesting - forging a new metal chassis? I'll try to repair it with the thick card...but if my posting warns others to beware...or someone has had a similar problem, perhaps they can reply. Thanks again.

I've not had the problem with that make, but have with other older stock... Plasticard can be used, though I'd tend to use metal as its stiffer. Card wouldn't be suitable.

Depending on the mechanism design, if the chassis block is to house a centre motor driving both bogies these can be replaced in metal, either a thick strip, or even better a suitable sized 'U' channel. Brass is a good choice, easy to cut and drill the holes that will be required, and also to soft solder too if fittings like bogie guides are required.

Don't give up on trying for a spare yet though. Is there a UK distributor for Klein Modellbahn, definitely worth a try. There are also continental and US dealers who handle international mail order; again ask if they specialise in this maker's products.

Not the first time I see this problem turning up with that manufacturer.
