GWR / Humbrol colours

Post by PeterDK »

Dear all

I'm writing for some help again - so please bear with me.

I was at the post office yesterday to pick up a parcel from the UK, containing amongst other things . ... a kit for a goods shed for the up and coming GWR Lenton branch model railway.

I noticed to my dispare that I'de forgotten to order paints for the kit. Humbrol paints are available in Denmark, so I'm planning to use these paints for the model. However I'm not sure which paint numbers represent GWR chokolate and cream in dull shades. Any help is most welcome.

As far as the layout goes, I've got the track laid and wired, though I still need for fix up the control panel. I'm looking forward to posting pictures as soon as there is something worth taking pictures of.

Thanks again for any help

Happy modelling

Peter

I've never used Humbrol colours for GWR stock PeterDK - do they have a website that could help you ?

Chocolete and cream are British Railways western region colours, for GWR you will need light and dark stone, pheonix paints are close to the correct colours the railmatch colours are too pale.

Are you painting the scenery or the stock? Is this set in the grouping GWR period (1923-1948) or will it be the later western region (1948 onwards) to allow green diesels and the like to be run?

For GWR, David is quite right, light and dark stone are the correct colours and Phoenix is generally regarded as closer to the correct colours than Railmatch in this case. To see how they were applied, have a look here. These shades are only available in enamel, I have not seen a decent match for them in any acrylic range.

If modelling the Western Region then Chocolate and cream become appropriate for buildings (see Bodmin at the bottom of the link above). Tamiya Flat Brown is a good match for WR chocolate and may be easier to source than specialist railway paints.
