West Ruislip oo gauge dcc
thought I would start the thread for my new layout, at the moment it is a pile of frames, 4 storage boxes of rolling stock and one of track,
now for the plan, as my better half and I are looking to hopefully move home in the next few years, I am planning a basic layout, to be built in modules so it is east to move when required, and inspired by Pete Watermans Making tracks in being able to expand as and when funds permit,
for the moment the layout will be based on the track plan for West Ruislip, I spent many hours there as a Kid watching the steam specials that ran through there in the 1980's from Marylebone to Stratford Upon Avon, and also the Christmas Santa specials to High Wycombe, as a former GW line it fits with the majority of my rolling stock, and gives me excuses to also run the non GW locos as well,
the frame is made of 2"X2" with 2"x1" ends, 4 are 4' X 1' , these will make up the main station area and a fiddle yard on the other side, for the boards I will use 4'X1' loft boards, on the station side it will be 2 boards giving me a 2' area to play with, and just 1 board on the fiddle yard side, and 2 are 5'x1, these will carry the curves to join the two sides, with boards on the top cut to match the side sections,
the track plan I will use for the station side is based off this https://www.s-r-s.org.uk/html/gwa/S63-2h.pdf
track wise, it will be code 100 streamline on the station side, and set track for the fiddle yard, I have 3rd and 4th radius set track curves, and contemplating using these and having the centre roads at set track spacing, but the relief lines at streamline spacing, or use flexi track to transition into the set track geometry, I am sure I will get good advice in the best direction to go on this, I have decided to put points in to access the down relief, as this in reality was 4 track from Northolt Junction,
not made any plans for the fiddle yard as yet, that is a bridge I will cross once I have got the station section the way I want
I will run the layout on DCC using Rail master,
Rolling stock is mostly GWR in both GW and BR liveries, with Bachmann and Hornby Collett coaches
I have an A3, A4 and a B12 in LNER livery and teak coaches, and the Talisman train pack with coach extension pack with an A3 in BR green
I have a streamlined duchess in red and black 5 in LMS livery, with coronation coaches in red and gold and standard red LMS coaches
I also have 2 9F's and Clan Line in BR livery,
I also have a good stock of MK1 coaches, a rake of Pullmans and good stock of goods wagons and brake vans ,
I hope that all makes sense, and hope it interests people in what I am doing

anywhere even remotely prototypical interests me, always good to see how people approach the scale compression issues
this also sounds worth following being in the process of a "dismantlable" layout myself

Re: West Ruislip oo gauge dcc
I was doing a few calculations earlier and realised that the two frames I have made to join the main station boards and the fiddle yard is on the small side for the 3rd and 4th radius set track curves, this would mean the curves carried over onto the boards for the station and fiddle yard,
I had foolishly only made the frame 1' wide to take one of the loft boards that are 4'x1', I will need to extend this to take two boards to give me 2' and enough room to fit the curved track on to the end boards, and give me full boards for the station and fiddle yard,
I think this will be beneficial down the line when I decide to expand the layout,
luckily I have only constructed the frames, so it will be simple to dismantle and cut some longer end pieces to make these wider, better to find this out now than if I found this when the frames and boards had been fitted together and track laying had started.

Certainly interests me. I'll be following along to see how it progresses.roadie stu wrote:

Re: West Ruislip oo gauge dcc
Made some progress this afternoon, modified one of the end frames to allow the extra boards to accomodate the 4th radius currves I am planning to use, and also fitted the legs and tops, I have also fitted the boards and legs to one of the Ruislip boards, I have taken some pictures and will have to work out how to post them.
I still have to make six more sets of legs, make the adjustments to the other end frame, and fit the boards to the other Ruislip frame, end frame and the fiddle yard frames,
Then it will be clearing a space In the loft then assembling it all together, then the track laying can start
Regards

It will be great when you get trains zooming around!

Re: West Ruislip oo gauge dcc
It will be, but still a long way to go before then,
It's been nearly 15 years since I dismantled my last layout, but in that time I have been building up my rolling stock and locomotives,
The locomotives have been maintained and serviced with regular running on my rolling road, so they have had some use,
With the West Ruislip track plan, it should give plenty of variation on different train movements, it will be a bit of a "tail chaser" for the moment, but with the main and relief lines and a few sidings, I can run a freight heading on the "UP" towards London, bring it onto the relief line to allow an express to pass, then follow on after, and on the "Down" a local auto coach can be overtaken by a freight, and also have a locomotive shunting in the yard, so should be able to have plenty going on
As the saying goes " all good things come to those who wait"

Re: West Ruislip oo gauge dcc
Good Evening
had a busy day yesterday, as I have had a few days off in between jobs, I have made more legs for the boards ( still need to make 2 more sets) and I have put some of the boards together and started to Lay track!! pictures below
this is the track plan I am using, due to space I will only be able to fit the station area and will not have sidings on the down relief after the station
progress on the track so far
[url=https://flic.kr/p/2qhBF7r]
the points all have had droppers fitted and I have pre drilled holes for fitting point motors in the future, I have still got to make some more droppers to go on the straights, but happy with the progress so far, still have three more frames to fit and fit the boards to, hope to get some more completed next weekend
regards

nice wood workery, how the heck did you get it to the loft after building it outside?
looks decently sturdy and the track plan looks good too
wonderful feeling getting the start of track down

I removed the legs and refitted them once I got everything up in the loft, I still have 3 frames without boards to fit together, so thats the plan for next weekend, aleopardstail wrote: ↑Fri Sep 20, 2024 9:27 pm nice wood workery, how the heck did you get it to the loft after building it outside?

it certainly is a good feeling to get track down, and also a reality check with the picture you have in your head, to what you can actually achieve, but a compressed version is better than nothing

Re: West Ruislip oo gauge dcc
pretty much every model railway suffers space compression to some level, easier to just say "to hell with it" and interpret the location in a way that suits what you want to do with it. I mean in OO the track scale is wrong to start with, thats before you get into curves that are on the tight side, points that are too small etcroadie stu wrote: ↑Fri Sep 20, 2024 9:49 pmI removed the legs and refitted them once I got everything up in the loft, I still have 3 frames without boards to fit together, so thats the plan for next weekend, aleopardstail wrote: ↑Fri Sep 20, 2024 9:27 pm nice wood workery, how the heck did you get it to the loft after building it outside?

I think its a nice track plan anyway
as for removable legs.. I could just about get the individual bits of deck up into the loft here, but not with framing attached
*shakes fist at those who built the place in the late 1800s*

Looks bigger than mine! Nice work.roadie stu wrote:

Well done getting it into the loft, even with the legs off.

Re: West Ruislip oo gauge dcc
Good Evening all,
Had a busy week, started a new job on Monday, but I have also been busy with the layout,
Had to undo some of the trackwork to add some extra droppers as I had a few dead spots, but this has been rectified and I have run a few locos around the trackwork that has been laid so far, found the Lima 45xx is not playing ball at the moment, even though I had it running on the rolling road the other week, after I had fitted a DCC chip, that's another job to add to the to do list,
The first runs have been with my tender drive Flying Scotsman, loco drive Duchess of Gloucester and my 8750 pannier tank, all track and paintwork were passed over with no issues, and I have run a few wagons and my GW b set with the pannier, again with no issues, so happy with the progress so far
Hoping to get the rest of the support frames connected up this weekend and get some more track down over the next few weeks
Will try and get a few more pictures over the weekend of the progress
Regards
Stuart

There is actually something to be said for having a bad performer in the fleet - specifically one thats reliable except for rubbish pick ups - such is perfect for testing track

good Evening
had a busy afternoon up in the loft, the frames are now complete, and all the boards have been fitted, also I have completed 3/4 of the track,
having a few issues with the wiring, as I keep getting short circuits that I didn't get last night, so a bit confused about that, but the plan going forward is to get all the track laid and make sure everything runs smoothly, then re do the wiring and hopefuly find the cause of the short
happy with the progress so far, and hope to have trains running soon
