The Great Northern Railway recognised the value of 'mixed traffic' locomotives in the 19th century. Lindsay says that seventy five locos of this class were built. One source says that a total of 117 Class 18 locos were built. The Great Northern Railway Society says that 153 were built. The different sources seem to agree that fifty of the class were out-sourced from locomotive builders, the remainder were built in-house at the Great Northern's Doncaster works

The Stirling 0-4-2 mixed traffic type or 'luggage engines' were constructed in five groups, A, A2, A3 and A4. Aha I hear you say, but thats only four groups. Yes, but one of the groups was divided between Doncaster and outside contractors, and these latter constructed 'outside' were (very slightly) differently specified. My recollection of the number in class is that the final total in service was one short of the total listed as constructed. One lost in an accident possibly? Much digging in the company minutes probably required to resolve that...

The Great Northern made some fantastic locomotives & very elegantly designed. The Sterling single is one of my favourite locos, a very pretty looking machine. My favourite GNR engine is the big 0-8-2 tanks. Very interesting loco, like a N1 on steroids.

Few railway enthusiasts recognise the Great Northern's locomotive engineering department exceptional achievement in continuity of design of maximum power express passenger traction.
The first CME, Archibald Sturrock, looking for something better than the early externally sourced traction had a 4-2-2 constructed.
Then Patrick Stirling developed his 4-2-2 design, and this had a true leading bogie, and the pattern of bogie, driver, trailing wheelset was fixed.
Henry Ivatt developed the first UK 4-4-2 when more power was required, large wide firebox boiler, Walschaerts gear, and superheat.
Nigel Gresley developed the first successful UK 4-6-2 when more power was required, three cylinders and high superheat ratio.
And that was sufficient in the UK for maximum express power, and the majority of subsequent UK pacifics followed Gresley's lead.
