Just watched an LMS instructional video on firing engines. Stand-out info gained - in 1938 the LMS alone used 5.5 million tons of coal just to run trains. I mean, it was always obvious they used quite a lot but... 5.5 million tons. A year. Staggering.

The amount of it that went out of the chimneys as soot was evident if you looked at the slate roofs in the streets running down to the goods yards. Those furthest from the tracks were a decidedly paler shade of blue/grey than those closest.

About 2.5% of mean annual UK national coal production over the 1923-1947 period of existence of the LMS. I'd estimate the entire UK railway system must have required about 13 million tons annually. Loads of the black diamonds available...
