LMS - How much Coal?

Post by Richard08 »

Just watched an LMS instructional video on firing engines. Stand-out info gained - in 1938 the LMS alone used 5.5 million tons of coal just to run trains. I mean, it was always obvious they used quite a lot but... 5.5 million tons. A year. Staggering.

The amount of it that went out of the chimneys as soot was evident if you looked at the slate roofs in the streets running down to the goods yards. Those furthest from the tracks were a decidedly paler shade of blue/grey than those closest.
