The Micro layout 'mission creep'

Post by jimread »

Hello all,

Anyone can call their layout a 'Micro' even if it's 8 ft long and of course they are quite entitled to do so.

BUT

A micro layout is 3 to 4 Square Feet or less with a reason for being, with operating potential and regardless of scale.
Anything over that is a 'Small' layout up to 24 Square Feet or 4ft x 6ft

Who said so? Carl Arendt, from the start of his website in 2002 until 2011 when he died. His website is here in its original form and here is the relevant page with the information: https://lone.net/trains/carendt.morphoi ... index.html Carl started out having to use his own stuff and ended up with two pages per month to add to his website, lots of tenacious work.

Why am I saying this because the definition has strayed from Carl's original concept. He spent the last ten years of his life promoting micro and small model railway layouts and I prefer to adhere to his legacy.

I came across Ian Holmes who has started the Micro Model Railway Dispatch (no 'Small' ones) a copy of issue Zero is available here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ophuj2uvq82u ... 2zGka?dl=0

Issue One has just been published here's the link

Cheers - Jim
