Another Triang Clerestory conversion

I am currently converting a pair of Triang Clerestory Brakes into a Diagram C10 Clerestory All-Third. This link take you to the build and will be updated each time the project progresses.

Impressive work. I love the Triang Clerestories. I just wish that Hornby would make a matching all third and some interiors. Making some non-clerestory roofs would be nice too. Ideal for the Railroad range.

Wish I had the inspiration and drive to do something like this.
I've inherited quite a few Triang coaches, but it's not freight.

Gerald, the provision by someone of standard pre-formed roofs for these coaches would be a boon. The clerestory elements can be taken away and filled but it is extremely time-consuming and not something I'd want to repeat unless I absolutely had to [I did it here https://srmg.org.uk/cambrian-composite]. Roofs can be formed from plastic card or brass sheet, but they are tricky to attach.

This is the state of play currently:



The body sits squarely although it is too high by 1mm. That could be very easily resolved, if I was to continue in this direction....

The bogie footboards have been removed as they extended too far beyond the coach width. Not a problem in itself, as some did have thier boards taken off. The real problem is the bogies themselves. The original constructor made such a pig's ears of assembling them that they just cannot be made to run true - too far out of square, and the extent of the problem could only be understood once they were in rolling condition. They cannot be disassembled without destruction.

So, I have bitten the bullet and shelled out almost £20 for a pair of Shapeways printed replacements. Expensive, and the ride height issue will need further consideration given a different method of attachment.

In the mean time, I'll get on with painting the body. The joins look far worse than they are in reality, I may try to fill out the right hand one a little more though.

If you are modelling these coaches as running when 30 or more years old, I would suggest leaving visible the 'repairs' that wooden construction vehicle bodies often carried after a long time in service; which were not concealed so carefully on stock that was now very much secondary...

You are correct about the repairs. Often these showed plating over the panelling and other patching to damaged woodwork right to the end of their lives.

It’s just pride though! Wanting to create invisible joints!

The main livery has been applied to the body and after some truly frustrating battles with the at-least 40 yr old Keyser bogies, they at last run true when bolted in place. Progress and photos may be seen by launching link at the head of the thread.
