Steam Trains to Sovereign Street on a 1914/1919 theme

I have purchased three gunpowder vans. Two are in Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway livery. (My layout is based around L&Y territory.
The third wagon is in North British Railway livery. A must buy as I live in the land of the former North British Railway. How has it has made its way to Yorkshire? I don't know, but modeler's license and all that.

I don't know either, but I should think you are on safe ground as your chosen period would have required a great many movements of explosives. From 5th August 1914 the UK's railways were managed jointly by a Railway Executive Committee whose members were drawn from the manaagements of all the major lines to coordinate efficient working in support of the war effort. One of their earlier actions was to put in place much 'common user' working of the railway owned wagons to reduce the number of 'empty return' movements of freight vehicles. Whether this directly affected the gunpowder vans I don't know, but many of these must have gone off their home system to deliver the products of on system manufacturers.

To obtain concrete justification would require research into all of manufacture and sales, and procurement and use, of explosives on NBR territory.

According to the North British Historical Study Group, NBR gunpowder vans were hired out to other companies. Unfortunately they do not know to which ones. Whether the L&Y had some NBR ones is unknown as they had some of their own based in Wakefield.

I have been building a new street scene. Slow progress, but then, I am in no rush. The buildings are a mix of wood, plastic and resin

J. Ladle & Son was a local shop of mine when I lived in Leeds. (Not sure if it is still there.)

Dad1Thank you for your kind comments also. The partial loss of use of my right hand is making modelling rather difficult. But the end result is more pleasing (to me).
