Steam Trains to Sovereign Street on a 1914/1919 theme

Post by glencairn »

As some people know, I run two train services (steam and diesels engines) on the same track layout. Photographs shown have tended to be rather mixed up. It is time to be 'tidied up'.

The fictional train Companies on the layout serve an area around Leeds. The engines are mainly 0.4.0s and 0.6.0s. They all run with a specific purpose to and from destinations. Most of all it is a 'fun' railway.

Here is a plan of the layout and the services that run.
IMG_0753.JPG
Steam Train Services

A -- Fiddle Yard. Is Earlsheaton Junction, Wetherby and East Seacroft on the line that passes Wyndham Farm.
The line over the bridge to the Fiddle Yard is Kirkstall, Kirkstall Forge and Leeds LNWR Passenger and Goods Station – B -- Diesel Engine Shed. C -- Scholarsgate Station. D -- Sovereign Street Station and Yard.

1 - Wyndham Farm. 2 -- The Ash Farm Fields. 3 -- J H Thompson Builders Merchants. 4 -- Marston's Scrap Merchants and house.

5 -- Small Industrial Estate. 6 -- The Bridge. 7 -- North Road. 8 -- Winterwood Manor.

Calder Railway Services are:-

Passenger Services from Earlsheaton Junction passing Wyndham Farm, Ash Farm Fields and stopping at Scholarsgate. They then continue to Sovereign Street. Their final stop is Leeds LNWR Station. The return services are in reverse.

Goods Services are:-

Goods from around the country; mainly Lancashire and West Yorkshire arrive at Earlsheaton Junction and travel the same line to Sovereign Street (not stopping at Scholarsgate Station).
Wagons are then shunted to the required Companies in the yard..
Through Goods Trains continue to Leeds LNWR Goods Yard.
The return services are in reverse.

Kirkstall & East Seacroft Railway Services are :-

Passenger Services from Kirkstall stopping at Sovereign Street. The train then takes the line behind North Road and Winterwood Manor, passes Wyndham Farm and on to East Seacroft.
(Passengers are mainly Barnbow Munitions Factory staff.)
Return services in reverse.

Goods traffic is all from Kirkstall Forge and T & J Harrison (Sovereign Street) and it all goes to Barnbow, the same route as passenger services
Return traffic in reverse.

Leeds, Scarcroft & Wetherby Railway services

Goods traffic is from the north and travels on K&ESR metals to Sovereign Street and LNWR Goods Yard (Leeds). Some goods go to The Blackburn Aircraft Factory at Olympia Works, Roundhay, Leeds.

Passenger trains travel the same route.

Its nice to see the history for your layout. Also the track layout.
Theres definitely a lot in place to allow you interesting running sessions. I like how you separated the threads to, switching between steam and diesels gives you a whole other level of operation as well.

I mention my steam trains running to Barnbow. Although the railway is fictitious, Barnbow actually existed. For a short while I lived and worked about a mile away from the factory.

There is a memorial to 'The Barnbow Lasses' in Manston Park, Leeds.

Another Company that has traffic on my layout is The Blackburn Aircraft Company that was at Roundhay, Leeds.

Yes, Tony. I bought them off a company who sells them on fleabay. £1.99 for three different ones (incl. P&P). The T & J Harrison one (and others of members of my family) I printed myself.
