With regards to plywood; quality birch plywood is better than the cheap hardwood ply you get in the chain DIY stores.

Birch plywood is superb but due to its quality of wood and waterproof adhesive can be hard to work. Try cutting qty 64 x 4” diameter lightening holes in 18mm thick birch ply. It gave my power saw a workout as well when cutting off 150 mm wide strips for baseboard framing. The formaldehyde glue stinks when heated by power tools - not nice, so wear a fume filter mask.
