Which sound/speakers for Heljan DP2

Post by mkrob »

I intend to fit sound to my Heljan DP2,but can't decide which sound scheme or speakers!

I've narrowed my options to these :-

Sound schemes

(A)Digitrains class 50 - Well respected purvayor of sound schemes done by Paul Chetter, with 28 functions, many of which I'd never use. Probably the most realistic class 50 sound.

http://www.digitrains.co.uk/ecommerce/s ... -zimo.aspx

(B)YouChoos class 50 - This scheme has possibly the most usable class 50 sounds, but the demo of the class 50 is lacking in clarity. It has 6 horn functions & station announcement included in the 28 functions!

©MrSoundguy DP2 - The YouTube video's sound good, but different to the other class 50 sounds I've heard. It sounds a bit like a cross between a class 40 & class 50, but I like it, bearing in mind the 50 & DP2 had different turbo's, if I'm not mistaken. This scheme has 14 functions.

Finally,I fancy 2 Zimo speakers for it ala SLW class 24. If it's good enough for SLW, it's good enough for me!

I'd appreciate any opinions or personal experience/ advice on this before I tear all of the hair I have left out.

Wasn't DP2 a prototype Deltic? I think I have to look it up myself now! I know through experience of working coaches behind class 50's that they sound rather like a class 37 but give out even more exhaust fumes! Sound wize, to me a 37, 47 and 50 sound similar. Heavy low revving muscle.

DP2 was a prototype for what became the class 50, built within a deltic bodyshell (although the grilles are different).

Thanks for explaining. Was it DP1 that was the prototype Deltic or was that something else again? I know the prototype was in light blue and DP2 was green. Can't think of DP1.

DP1 (Deltic Prototype 1) was the original with Napier opposed piston engines. All the green ones I've seen on the web have had the Deltic engines. I've got a DP1 and am waiting on an ESU Loksound V4 decoder with Legomanbiffos sound on it. I've already fitted an EM2 Earth mover speaker and am looking forward to hearing it roar.

A rather good site on the subject of the EE/Napier locomotive adventure here.

I often wondered what would have happened to DP2 if it had not been involved in that crash, granted it would have eventually been withdrawn as non-standard but I think that it could have lasted for a good few years more. I never had the pleasure of seeing it, did it sound the same as the production batch class 50s or did the (unnecessary) modifications to the power unit change the sound?

ER would cheerfully have had a fleet of DP2s (unaltered by the Derby drones who ruined the 50 by adding all their sophistimacated doodads and hobbled it) instead of the Brush type 4. DP2 was simple, robust, amply powerful enough for most turns and cheap. I don't recollect anything out of the ordinary in the DP2's sound. Nondescript boring diesel rumble like a Brush 4, like a EE type 4, like a Peak, etc..

Total underwhelming compared to the repertoire of DP1 and the EE type 5s. Wubba-wubba-wubba, Wheeeeemaboom, wheeeeemaboom, chang a chang a chang, whuuum, whuuum, whuum. And that was just in the first five yards from starting away as the first engine came up to full chat... It was some small compensation for the loss of the Doncaster wide firebox power that at least we had the funkiest diesel on the network. Mwaaah-waah-waah waah-waah; that's barrelling past at full speed, both engines running. And there was much more.

As for the insane wail of the Baby Deltic once fully opened out, could hear it approaching for miles: WHEEEE!

I also posted this question on RMweb, with an interesting reply from E3109.

for-heljan-dp2/

As he says,it sounds like a Portuguese 1800 class,which sounded like a class 40.
Anything with a EE 16CSVT or similar prime mover, would be ok. Who's to know anyway?

One other point to consider when choosing the sound provider is the interactive driving of the loco that the chip allows. In particular Paul Chetter's DIgitrains projects on Zimo are a prime example and Mr Soundguy also I would include.
