Hornby APT Active Tilt

Post by pborlace »

Hi,

I may be mad but I have a scheme to create an active tilt system for my Hornby APT. My plan is to use a microprocessor linked to an accelerometer/gyroscope and feed the input to a micro servo motor. The main problem apart from everything is that I don't want to extensively modify my almost pristine APT and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a cosmetically rough (rougher the better) APT driving car, even just the underframe to use as a test bed. I have been watching Ebay for ages but nothing has come up recently.

Thanks for looking.

Mine is ok cosmetically but lacks armature and gears in the power car. I think what you need is a set of bogies which could have their extensions (actuators) cut off to prevent mechanical tilting at low speed. Apart from the problem of low speed tilting the mechanical system worked quite well. There was a garden railway not far from here which had the lengths and curves for it to show off its high speed tilting, they ran a pair of them coupled together some how, they never stopped out on the line to see how they had done it.

Yes, that's about it. As they are relatively rare I couldn't bring myself to cut up a one that was in perfect condition.

How about a model of the experimental "POP" unit

If you are going to that sort of effort wouldn't it be worth looking at a proper formation APT that looks like an APT? The hornby one is kind of a vaguely familiar looking toy really.

I'm more interested in the technical challenge. Apart from the Rapido APT-E the Hornby model is the best available. If Hornby or anyone brought out a more realistic model of the APT-P I would be at the front of the queue to buy one.
