A cheeky Gn15 diesel

Afternoon all,

I normally model North American HO, but I have also been bitten by the Gn15 bug.

I decided to scratch build a little diesel.



Made from 2 mm art card to a freelance design (made it up as I went along!). Using spares and sprue from an old Revell kit (fuel tank and exhaust), electric guitar bridge saddles for the axle boxes and styrene for the leaf springs, and weathered with Tamiya powders.

The mechanism is a modified battery powered toy train mech (trainset in a tin), wheels converted to 33" HO wheelsets.

Yes they are charming! I don't think this will be the last one I build.

A rough plan:



Just a little roundy roundy, 26" by 15". I have some O-16.5 track left over from a previous adventure. Style will possibly be a small estate railway.

That's the thing I have found with Gn15. Most layouts lend themselves to atmosphere rather than lots of rolling stock so less is indeed more.
I will be watching with keen interest. Not a scale I would model in as I am (so far) more of a RTR man and I don't think there is much in the way of RTR in Gn15? But what do I know lol. A great start SC/ScR fan. I even went and looked at the Train in a tin sets too

I don't believe there is any RTR in Gn15. Plenty of kits available but most people scratchbuild rolling stock.

The only RTR items are vehicles and people, if you stick to 1:24 for example.

I'm going to buy another train set in a tin for another chassis.

There's a growing band of 009 modellers that are using Radio Control for operation, I'd have thought their stuff should be able to fit in the Gn15 bodies. If you sign up to NGRM-Online forum and search it they have a fair bit on Radio Control in (tiny!) models!

The battery lasts about 4 hours or so.

I already have some radio control 16mm scale stuff, but Gn15 remote control has been done. I'm not planning to try it on this little plank.

Very good. Never seen one of those little battery locos converted like this. I know in standard form they are reliable and can take a battering as I used to have one as a kid in the early to mid 1980's. It was only the plastic track which was more vunerable. The price I've seen these sets when not in a tin (The tin doubles the price) are amazingly cheap for what they are. I saw one small set for around £2 new. They just chug along hour after hour.. Battery after battery... Nice little things. Cheap but impressive. Love what you've done to it as well. Well done.
