Oopsie! I would appreciate a photo of your Vale of Rheidol 2-6-2. It doesn't matter about the chassis - people know what to expect with the wheels. I'll try and get the Baldwin/Alco thing sorted as soon as possible. As for the Beyer Garrett matter, I used that photo because it offers an idea of what the model should look like. I'll probably get round to replacing it in time, but until then it can be used to get an impression of the loco.

I agree with you about Backwoods Miniatures - absolute class stock! :D

I'll see what I can do, might take a while though as I'm not particularly quick about these things.

Also can I suggest that regarding the ALCO you just say that there have been models available of it in both its original generic form, and also specifically of the one rebuilt by the Ffestiniog as 'Mountaineer' (which you pictured).

Just for Bunji, here is the Chivers kit for the original Vale of Rheidol locomotives:

And as a bonus here is the Chivers kit for the Single Fairlie 0-6-4 "Gowrie", and features the same Minitrix chassis that was originally under my VofR loco:

I apologise for the poor quality of the images, I took them with my video camera, and it really isn't very good at stills - I'll get around to pointing an SLR at them at some point!!

Thanks very much! I've swapped them into the catalogue. I'm always on the lookout to replace prototype photos with photos of models - some details are different than on the real thing. :)

GEM Baldwin 4-6-0. I built this about fifteen years ago, so it can be built better!!

Requires a Farish 08 diesel chassis, costs £30 (the kit, not the chassis!! ).

Absolutely brilliant!
Cheers for this... its answered a lotta questions!

Has anyone tried substituting a chassis from a dapol 2-6-2 for a minitrix one? I'm prepared to bet the dapol one runs better! I'm specifically thinking "Gowrie" here, mainly 'cos it looks a proper beast. Do you need any additional bits, or just the kit and the chassis for this

Thanks...

Could someone point me in the right direction as to where I might find the Golden Arrow Southwold Railway Loco Kit? Or the Golden Arrow loco at the bottom of the picture that includes the chassis?

As a novice to 009 loco building, are things like rods etc hard to install?

Brian the Snail - Gowrie was a lot of fun to make, and runs on a very nice Minitrix chassis (you can see it in action on my "Moel Eilio" thread in the personal layouts forum), it's quite a straightforward kit to build but needs a bit of work to get balanced (additional weight at the front, and losing weight at the back - the roof is plasticard and I removed part of the cab floor beneath the bunker). You don't "need" additional bits (other than some lead to fill the boiler barrel/smokebox), but the kit is fairly basic and does benefit from some detailing, and after studying pictures of the original engine I added various bits of pipework, the brake cylinder, put coal in the bunker, and amended the straps on the smokebox and gave it a new dart. In the future I may go back to the model and replace the hinge on the smokebox door with a smaller one (and give it a smaller dart too!!), add on the sand boxes, and properly line out the loco.

businessman - Parkside Dundas do both Southwold engines, and a Farish chassis for one of 'em!! http://www.scalefour.org/parkside/ng2.htm With regards to your query about installing rods, I assume you mean the motion? Well most of the whitemetal kits will use the chassis with the motion as it is - which isn't complicated to install at all  , though a lot of kits will require you to mutilate the chassis slightly in order for the body to fit - which requires a certain amount of bravery to start with - but once you realise that it'll still run afterwards you get quite blase about it. The brass/nickel kits are a bit more daunting as you build the chassis entirely yourself... and I haven't worked up the courage to start any of mine yet!!!

My advice for building any OO-9 loco kit is to take your time, be patient, make sure all the parts fit properly before fixing them, solder it (soldering is actually a lot more forgiving than I imagined), and use a good set of needle files and a try square.

If the wheels don't fit...
it's probably narrow-gauge.
"Awkward thinking".

Here is a photo of the actual Chivers model of Edward Thomas (unbuilt).
The original image of Edward Thomas must be a different kit I think - it looks much more detailed and slightly different shape in places (or it's had a lot of detail added!).

I'm just thinking of getting started in 009, but where on earth do you manage to get the chassis's from?
I saw a nice kit at the Festiniog shop in the summer, but they don't stock them and the only thing that has been suggested to me is buy a new loco and take it apart, which for a Farrish 97xx is over £50!!

You join the 009 Society and get them secondhand off Brian (the s/h stall salesman!) - and the cheap kits as well...

Or you find out what chassis you need and risk ebay!!
